The Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia (CSPCV), a Center housed within IIHHS, is accepting applications for a part-time Service Member, Veteran, and Family (SMVF) Assistant.
CSPCV's mission is to equip Virginia's higher education communities to address suicide risk proactively and responsively. We support campuses by promoting well-being and providing training, consultation, opportunities for collaboration, and planning for suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. The Center serves 72 institutions (15 public, 24 private and 33 community colleges/universities). Services are available at no cost and are provided through a partnership of the Virginia Department of Health and The Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) at James Madison University.
Service Member, Veteran, Family (SMVF) Assistant:
CSPCV is seeking a highly motivated and organized assistant to support grant-funded initiatives supporting suicide prevention and well-being programming for students and campus personnel across Virginia who are service members, veterans and/or family members/caregivers. Funding specifically focuses on supporting some of the most at-risk sub-groups, including women veterans, those who are housing insecure, and caregivers.
This is a grant funded one-year position and contingent on continued funding. This position will be for up to 16 hours/week and is anticipated to start in October 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect and manage data for grant reporting (e.g., number of training participants, transcripts of interviews)
- Create social media posts relevant to suicide prevention
- Create and manage contact lists of SMVF-related personnel on campuses
- Identify resources for CSPCV website to support emotional well-being and suicide prevention for SMVF students and personnel
- Weekly meetings with supervisor
- Help coordinate, attend, and support quarterly meetings of SMVF Campus Collaborative (personnel from campuses across the state who are committed to supporting suicide prevention and holistic well-being for SMVF)
- Co-create and promote adoption of digital badges for SMVF personnel on campuses to raise awareness of military service and build community on campus
- Conduct and edit interviews to appear on webpage dedicated to "SMVF Stories of Resilience" featuring SMVF staff and students who have navigated challenges related to mental health and/or achieving their higher education goals
- Support Center staff with other administrative and clerical duties relevant to supporting suicide prevention for SMVF on campuses as assigned
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Excellence in written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfort talking about and addressing the topic of suicide professionally on a day-to-day basis.
- The ability to communicate with a high level of professionalism with campus professionals.
- A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Familiarity with Google applications Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Teams, and Outlook), and survey management software (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, Question Pro, Google Forms).
Additional Considerations:
- Professional experience with the military and/or familiarity with military culture would be beneficial.
- General familiarity with or interest in psychological factors contributing to well-being and positive mental health.

This is a part-time wage position with no benefits.
