Job Summary

The Master's in Speech Language Pathology program is part of the School of Health Professions and is housed within the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. The Clinical Educator/Supervisor will supervise graduate student clinicians during practicum. Additionally, the Clinical Educator/Supervisor assists with the day-to-day operation of the clinic, periodic program assessments, develop clinical protocols, and collect data for accreditation purposes. The SLP program is located on the UTHealth East Texas Health Sciences Campus. The self-sustaining SLP and Audiology Clinic is embedded within the Family Medicine Practice Unit of the hospital, affording our graduate students 3 semesters of training in a low acuity hospital setting before beginning their externship year.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
  • Supervises students during the practicum phase of the Master's in Speech Language Pathology program.
  • Meets regularly with students to review and approve therapy and diagnostic session plans.
  • Hosts post-intervention debriefing meetings with students.
  • Provides feedback and evaluates student performance.
  • Assists students develop and apply professional practice competencies including accountability, effective communication, evidence-based practice, and professional duties.
  • Assists students in the development of clinical writing skills.
  • Assesses student's clinical skills at various intervals throughout the semester.
  • Assists in the development of clinical forms and protocols.
  • Maintains clinical resources and equipment.
  • Assists in forming and overseeing patient groups.
  • Oversees and approves clinical hours, to ensure they are entered accurately (using Calipso)
  • Monitors student progress.
  • Maintains strict compliance with HIPPA, FERPA, ASHA Code of Ethics, as well as all institutional policies and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Assists the Clinical Coordinator in data collection.
  • Completes daily session notes in electronic medical record.
  • Participates in and assists with the weekly Clinical Practicum Seminar.
  • Treats patients in Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic when students are unavailable/on break.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • 2+ years of pediatric experience
  • 2 PDH in supervision per ASHA guidelines
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred
  • Auditory Verbal Therapy training preferred
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred

Required License/Certifications
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • License in Speech-Language Pathology in the State of Texas.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of speech, language, and hearing and medical terminology.
  • Excellent diagnostic and analytical skills.
  • Experience in a clinical setting providing speech-language pathology services to clients/patients.
  • Experience in clinical supervision/instruction to practicum students and/or clinical fellows.
  • Completed coursework and/or training in clinical supervision/instruction in speech-language pathology preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
