Overview
The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill a full-time, 12-months/year appointment in small animal internal medicine. Depending on experience, qualifications and interest, the successful candidate will be appointed to either a tenure-track (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) or non-tenure track (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) position.
Responsibilities
Applicants should have a strong interest and experience in clinical small animal internal medicine and in instruction of veterinary students. Clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate's interests and the type of appointment, i.e., clinical vs. tenure track. Tenure-track faculty are expected to establish a specific area of research focus, seek extramural funding, and mentor ACVIM residents pursuing graduate degrees. Clinical service expectations include teaching professional veterinary students, training residents and interns, and providing small animal internal medicine services for the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital.
Description of Small Animal Internal Medicine Service
The successful applicant will join a current team of two ACVIM-SAIM Diplomate faculty, 1 ECVIM-SAIM Diplomate faculty, six SAIM residents, and 1 SAIM specialty intern. Small Animal Internal Medicine is one of many specialties in Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital including anesthesiology, avian and exotic medicine, cardiology, clinical pathology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, sports medicine, and theriogenology.
Small animal medicine equipment includes a brand new portable endoscopy system from GSM Capital Animal Health which includes a slim endoscope, a super slim endoscope, a standard gastroscope, and a rigid rhinoscope. This complements our previous Fuji bronchoscope, gastroscope, and colonoscope and our Storz ureteroscope and rigid rhinoscope. The service also has a Vcheck V200 Bionote analyzer, an Echo Rebel iPad based digital microscope, and an HM70 EVO Samsung ultrasound machine for within service use. Small animal medicine is also supported by a full service in-house volunteer blood bank. Other onsite hospital equipment includes Co2 surgical laser (Aesculight), Eklin digital radiology, a state-of-the art Varian Edge Linear Accelerator, 3T Phillips MRI, GE 128-slice CT scan, a Siemens digital RF suite, and GE interventional radiology suite. The Auburn University MRI center provides 3T and 7T MRI service for research studies. The small animal and large animal ICU facilities are approved for ACVECC training and have dialysis capabilities. A virtual tour of the facility is available here.
The Small Animal Internal Medicine service at Auburn University has a highly successful resident training program with a robust caseload of approximately 5,000 SAIM cases and 30,000 small animal cases seen annually in the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital, which opened in 2014. The intermediate care ward can house up to 36 inpatients, the intensive care unit up to 18 inpatients, and the hospital has separate isolation units and separate receiving for infectious patients. The Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital also provides direct consultation for and transfer of care from Auburn Veterinary Specialists-Gulf Shores, a satellite of the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The Bailey hospital has a robust diagnostic imaging service and imaging support includes after-hours ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging. A licensed centralized pharmacy with five full-time very helpful pharmacists and one pharmacist board certified by the International College of Veterinary Pharmacy (DICVP) supports patient medication needs. The hospital is further supported by a clinical laboratory staffed full-time with clinical pathologists. An after-hours STAT lab is available for hematology (Heska and Idexx), chemistries (Idexx), blood gases and electrolytes (Nova Prime+VET), thromboelastography (traditional and Entegrion VCM VET), and Abaxis coagulation profiles. ICU/IMC monitoring capabilities include telemetry (Fukuda DS1800), pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, direct and indirect blood pressure, and point-of-care ultrasounds (4 Clarius C7s, 2 Sonosite SIIs, Samsung HM70A EVO). Advanced therapeutic modalities include Prismaflex CRRT system (capabilities for hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, ultrafiltration, and therapeutic plasma exchange), high-flow nasal oxygen (2 Volumax units), hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HVM unit), and mechanical ventilation (Maquet Servo-I, Respironics Puritan Bennet 840, and LVT2000).
Teaching, Research, and Scholarship Opportunities
Shared research space and technical support, including a clinical trials coordinator, are provided within the Department. There are numerous opportunities for research collaboration within the Auburn University veterinary medicine campus, Auburn University's main campus, and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Auburn campus. The Department participates in college-wide veterinary and graduate programs. Faculty development is a priority with a formal mentoring program for new faculty through the Department of Clinical Sciences. The Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (wp.auburn.edu/biggio) located on Auburn's main campus is a fantastic resource for all things teaching related including support for instructional technologies. The CVM also has monthly teaching enhancement workshops and a summer teaching institute that has brought nationally recognized speakers to present on a variety of teaching related topics.
Qualifications
The qualified applicant must hold a DVM or equivalent degree at the time employment begins, have completed residency training in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM/ECVIM-small animal internal medicine), and be a Diplomate of ACVIM/ECVIM-SAIM or qualified to sit for the ACVIM/ECVIM-SAIM specialty examination. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.
For a tenure-track position, research experience and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) are desired.
Application Process
We invite qualified applicants to submit: 1) Letter of intent describing strengths, professional goals, vision for contribution to the small animal medicine service, and statement describing research goals (tenure track interest), collaborative research (clinical track interest), teaching, or other scholarship interests, 2) a current curriculum vitae, and 3) names of professional references including mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three professional references.
