SoGE Laboratory Manager

SoGE Laboratory Manager

Location: School of Geography and the Environment, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QY

The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) is seeking an experienced and strategic Laboratory Manager to oversee the Geolabs — a hub of cutting-edge research spanning geochemistry, luminescence dating, ecosystems science, environmental forensics, sediment and water analysis, and eDNA.

The Geolabs support multiple research groups and host major analytical facilities, including ICP-MS and CNS instrumentation, alongside essential teaching laboratories. As Laboratory Manager, you will provide both operational and strategic leadership, ensuring the effective day-to-day running of facilities while guiding long-term planning, equipment investment, and laboratory development.

You will coordinate laboratory usage and experiment scheduling, support researchers and students in developing and refining methodologies, oversee procurement and budgeting for consumables and equipment, and manage maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting of complex analytical instruments. A strong commitment to health and safety is essential, including oversight of hazardous materials, regulatory compliance, and safe fieldwork practices linked to laboratory activities.

The role includes line management of laboratory technicians, contribution to teaching and field classes where appropriate, and participation in relevant School committees. You will act as a key technical advisor to staff, students, and external partners, and may engage in independent research with the permission of the Head of School.

We are seeking a candidate with a doctorate in a relevant scientific discipline, substantial laboratory research expertise, and proven experience managing analytical laboratory environments. You will bring strong leadership, organisational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. Experience securing and managing external commercial laboratory contracts is essential.

This is a rare opportunity to play a central role in supporting world-leading environmental research and education through the strategic management of advanced laboratory facilities.

This post is permanent and offered on a full time basis (1 FTE / 37.5 hours).
