Essential Job Duties:
Are you a CDL-certified leader with a passion for sustainability, safety, and operational excellence? Join the Facilities Division at NC State University as a Solid Waste & Recycling Collections CDL Supervisor and help drive our campus toward its ambitious 75% waste goal.
In this essential role, you'll lead a team of five full-time employees in managing front-end dumpster collections for recycling, compost, landfill, and specialized waste streams across NC State's vibrant campus. Your leadership will ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality service that supports the university's sustainability mission. You will also be required to communicate effectively with supervisors and the general public, and must be able to understand both verbal and written instructions and other communications related to your work assignments. Furthermore, you must be physically able to occasionally lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Operational & Team Leadership
- Supervision: Lead, schedule, and manage a team of five (5) full-time CDL A/B drivers. Foster a positive culture centered on safety and service.
- Safety & Training: Lead daily safety talks and specialized training on equipment operation, material handling, and the use of routing software/on-board scales. Promote safety as the highest priority.
- Route Management: Oversee all front-end dumpster collections (averaging over 1,450 weekly pickups across waste, recycling, compost, and special waste streams). Utilize routing software and daily reports to ensure optimal service, addressing driver and service location issues promptly.
- Physical Requirement: This position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
2. Fleet & Infrastructure Management
- Fleet Oversight: Lead the inspection and operation of the team's seven collection trucks (5 front-end loaders and 2 container carriers). Ensure adherence to maintenance standards and coordinate complex repairs with the NC State Auto Shop.
- Compactor Maintenance: Conduct monthly maintenance on six compactors (4 horizontal, 2 vertical). Provide immediate response and coordinate vendor repairs for out-of-service equipment.
- Dumpster Maintenance: Manage the appearance and functionality of approximately 500 front-load dumpsters, including annual painting, label replacement, and coordinating major repairs (lids, casters, welding).
3. Sustainability & Service
- Ensure accurate collection and hauling of materials to appropriate facilities, directly supporting the NC State Compost Facility and the university's environmental targets.
- Manage special service requests and utilize routing software to provide excellent customer service across campus.

Other Work/Responsibilities:
- This position is designated as Essential Personnel and is required to report to work during adverse weather conditions or emergencies, even when the University is operating on an alternative schedule. May include assisting with snow and ice removal as directed by a supervisor.
Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Experience with heavy equipment operation.
- Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot or maintain vehicle and equipment mechanical systems such as engine, transmission, exhaust, brakes, suspension, tires, and hydraulics.
- Must be able to use hand tools, air tools and hydraulic jacks necessary to perform repairs and maintenance.
- Ability to provide on-the-job training to operators in the areas of equipment operations, safety, inspection, maintenance, repair and policy and procedures.
- Basic computer skills and experience.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience operating heavy equipment in a commercial or industrial setting
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams of CDL drivers or equipment operators
- Hands-on experience with forklift, crane, and hauling operations
- Background in waste management, recycling, or facilities services
- Familiarity with route planning and optimization for waste collection systems
Required license or certification:
- Valid NC CDL Class A or B license required and must be maintained
- Certifications must be maintained while employed at NCSU
