Staff Associate I
The Columbia Initiative in Cell Engineering and Therapy (CICET) is seeking a highly motivated Staff Associate I. The Staff Associate I will work on cutting-edge immunotherapy research in the Sadelain Lab to develop novel chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells for cancer therapy. This role encompasses hands-on experimental work, management of laboratory documentation, and supervised execution and development of advanced cellular and molecular assays. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in establishing cellular and genetic engineering methodologies, developing and following protocols, collaborating with lab members, undertaking research focused on CAR T cell therapies in ovarian cancer under the supervision of senior lab members and the PI.
The research will be conducted primarily in the Sadelain Lab with dedicated bench space, desktop stations, and tissue culture facilities. The candidate will have access to core services provided by the university. Time allocation is structured as follows: 80% laboratory work, 20% documentation and administrative responsibilities.
Functional Knowledge
Perform assays, including blood and tissue sample processing, cell culture, flow cytometry, PCR, cloning, western blotting and other immunological assays, ensuring rigorous validation, titration, and quality control. Be responsible for research subprojects and carry out (set up and perform) new lab experiments and assays/techniques under supervision.
Problem Solving
Utilizes analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines, protocols, and procedures.
Decision Making/Autonomy
Works within guidelines to carry out assigned duties and meet project needs, conduct of experiments, and data analysis. Maintain accurate daily records, laboratory logs, and experimental documentation, assisting the PI with troubleshooting, problem-solving, and addressing urgent laboratory issues.
Technical Expertise
Ability to operate and maintain equipment, computers, software programs and research. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, place orders, verify receipt, and adhere to Columbia University's procurement and record retention policies.
Communication
Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) to continuously enhance laboratory protocols, introduce new techniques, and address project-specific research needs.
- Bachelor's degree in Immunology, Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline and 4 years experience preferred.
- Required experience in flow cytometry, laboratory animal experiments, molecular biology, and tissue culture with demonstrated ability to work effectively in a research team.
- Ability to independently identify and troubleshoot experimental problems with meticulous attention to detail and quality assurance.
- Work experience cannot substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
