Staff Associate I
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Staff Associate I to work within the Marine and Polar Geophysics department. The Staff Associate I will support the management of oceanographic data for the US science community working with other team members under the supervision of the Senior Research Scientist. Responsibilities include the curation, documentation and delivery of shipboard underway data to national archives in support of the Rolling Deck to Repository using established workflows. Experience with GIS, scripting, programming, or database skills a strong asset. Requires skills in problem solving and to work independently.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Responsible for the management of all annual cruise distributions from a select number of ships. Execute and monitor scripted protocols and workflows to validate and manage cruise data packages including registration within the R2R cruise catalog. Working with junior data manager.
- Processing and quality assessment of marine geophysical data for the Rolling Deck to Repository Program. Responsible for quality assessment processing for selected expeditions each year.
- Contribute to design and development of services for marine geoscience data access, ingestion and interoperability and work closely with developers.
- Serve as primary liaison with ship operators for the select ships of responsibility.
- Responsible for reporting on R2R at annual community workshops involving ship operators and other marine data providers. Assist in the preparation of reports for NSF.
- Assist with training student helpers.
- Reports directly to the Senior Research Scientist. Receives general supervision. Exercises independent judgement and initiative within specific objectives set by the supervisor.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Earth and Environmental Science or related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience required. Must have basic computer skills including UNIX and scripting experience (e.g., shell, PHP, Java, Python, Matlab, R) and experience in the processing of scientific data. Experience working with databases (e.g., SQL) and marine sensor data acquisition (e.g., bathymetric sonar) is a strong asset. Should have strong problem solving, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work independently within specified guidelines and have strong task management skills.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
