Stationary Engineer
Under designated supervision, operate, maintain, and repair heating, air conditioning, power, steam, and water systems. Be familiar with drawings and circuit diagrams of the boiler plant and auxiliary equipment in order to quickly troubleshoot and diagnose defects in the systems. Operate Computerized Building Automation Systems. Install and repair small to large systems that provide a variety of air conditioning functions where specific and critical climatic conditions are necessary.
This is a Support Staff Union position as stated in the Support Staff collective bargaining agreement Grade Level F
- Operate, maintain and repair heating, air conditioning, power, and water services. Collect water samples and perform tests to determine acidity, causticity, and alkalinity, and from results determine the type and amounts of chemicals to add to the boiler water, for scale and corrosion control.
- Operate, maintain, repair, dismantle, and reassemble air handling fans, chilled water pumps, impellers and condensing water pumps. Overhaul valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings. Align motor drive wheels.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all heating and air conditioning related equipment and systems.
- Check pumps and gauges to assure proper operating conditions. Record temperatures and pressure for power consumption of all equipment; make adjustments to maintain temperatures and pressures. Make proper adjustments to fuel feeds and air drafts for maximum combustion efficiency.
- Operate Building Automation System (BAS), to provide proper environmental conditions in buildings, and for proper operation of Chillers, Boilers, Cooling Towers, Pumps, Air Handlers and associated HVAC equipment connected thereto. Make programming changes to BAS as directed by the Chief Engineer.
- Perform carpentry, electrical, painting, and/or plumbing functions requiring a level of skill and responsibility characteristic of work of at least an apprentice level.
- May provide coordination of work of other employees.
- May operate a motor vehicle to transport employees and material when required; operate snow plow and other related snow removal equipment both hand and powered.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education Required:
High school diploma or equivalent
Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements
- Valid NJ driver's license.
- Valid NJ Black Seal License or the ability to qualify for Black Seal License within 60 days of employment.
- Computer literate or become computer literate within 60 days of employment.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Conditions may arise where stationary engineers may alternate shifts, locations, and be required to work weekends. At any time, the engineer may be in charge of the heating and cooling plant and be responsible for following instructions and direction from the chief engineer or from relayed written orders from the previous shift.
