General Duties

Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, adjustments, testing and repair of steam power plant, air conditioning, chiller plant, fire protection systems, electro-mechanical building equipment and related auxiliary systems in public buildings; performs related work.

  • Operates, maintains repairs and adjusts manuals and automatic gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, steam reducing stations, engines, turbines, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, generators, motors, water treatment systems, cooling towers, condensers, evaporators, emergency generators and associated equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and lighting in public buildings.
  • Performs periodic inspections of equipment and repairs of such equipment.
  • Schedules, performs and may oversee preventive maintenance.
  • Directs the work of oilers, high-pressure plant tenders and other subordinate personnel assigned to HVAC plant operations.
  • Takes responsible charge of a watch and while so engaged, supervises and directs subordinates personnel; addresses emergency repairs as required.
  • Operates control consoles in control rooms for building maintenance and building automation systems.
  • Adjusts HVAC systems water chemistry through testing, treatment, retesting and recording of readings.
  • Prepares requisitions for materials and spare parts in accordance with College procedures.
  • Orients, trains and monitors subordinates and other personnel on plant operations and job related safety.
  • Reads meters, gauges and other recording devices keeping logs of same.
  • Prepares and maintains records and makes reports of both a technical and informational nature regarding HVAC maintenance and repair.

The Stationary Engineer serves an Essential Personnel employee in the Building & Grounds Department. The responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • When assigned, supervise the operation and maintenance of a 103,500lbs per hour high-pressure steam plant. This includes all auxiliary equipment, surge tank, DA, feedwater pumps, transfer pumps, steam PR V's etc.
  • When assigned, operate and maintain a 5,000-ton central cooling plant. This includes cooling towers, fans, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, electronic valves, and all other auxiliary equipment.
  • Operate and maintain the Apex Center 11,300 square foot swimming pool. This includes the operation, maintenance, and repair of the pumps, filters, pool chemistry equipment, and pool water chemistry testing.
  • When assigned, responsible for the rounds of the mechanical equipment rooms in our 18 campus buildings.
  • Monitor and adjust the Siemens Insight BMS system. Answer calls from the campus community. Assign repairs as needed and follow up to ensure completion. Log complaints and place calls to service contractors for support, when required.
  • When assigned, perform repairs on the campus HVAC system equipment. This includes air handlers, pumps, PRVs, condensers, compressors, air compressors, fan coils, VA Vs, uninvents, etc.
  • Monitor and test all life-safety equipment as needed. This includes fire alarm systems and emergency generators.
  • Perform Archibus work orders and PMs procedures. Provide oversight and implementation of new processes.

Currently recruiting for two shifts

  • Watch Shift: Sunday - Thursday, 6:00am-2:00pm
  • Watch Shift: Saturday - Wednesday, 10:00pm-6:00am

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A valid License for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
  2. A valid certificate of qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (unlimited Capacity) issued by the New York City Fire Department and a Universal CFC Certificate issued by EPA for Handling Refrigerants.

For appointment in certain Colleges, candidates will also be required to possess one or more of the following:

  • A valid Citywide Standpipe Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (S13)
  • A valid Citywide Automatic Sprinkler Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department (S12)
  • A valid Interior Fire Alarm Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department
  • A valid Pool Operator’s certificate issued by a Qualified Swimming Pool Water Treatment Operator Provider

Other Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates will hold these licenses: Valid HP Steam License, FDNY Refrigeration Engineer Q0I COF, Universal Refrigerant Recovery License. Certified Pool and Spa Operation Certification.
  • FDNY COF's S12, S13, S95, FOi, G60, A35, C42, P9

Compensation

Annual Salary: $154,303

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
