Job Description:
Summary:
The Center for Student Belonging (CSB) seeks highly motivated and collaborative Undergraduate STEP Student Ambassadors to serve as peer leaders and mentors for students participating in the Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) and throughout the academic year.
STEP Student Ambassadors cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment for incoming and first-year students. They support residential and co-curricular programming, foster meaningful connections to campus resources, and contribute to student success and retention initiatives. This role provides valuable leadership development and hands-on experience in higher education administration and student affairs practice.
Ambassadors work closely with CSB professional staff, undergraduate student leaders, and campus partners to implement high-impact programs that promote belonging, academic success, and sustained engagement for historically underrepresented and first-generation students. This position reports to the Assistant/Associate Director for Student Belonging.

Essential Functions:
- Summer Responsibilities
- Participate in all mandatory onboarding sessions, trainings, staff meetings, and workshops.
- Facilitate 2–3 weekly evening events and weekend excursions that promote student engagement and community building.
- Support residential programming and community development initiatives.
- Assist professional staff with room checks, facility monitoring, and residential resource management as needed.
- Academic Year Responsibilities
- Mentor first-year and STEP students in navigating campus resources and academic expectations.
- Plan and support co-curricular workshops, social programs, and engagement initiatives.
- Attend weekly check-ins with CSB staff and maintain consistent communication with assigned students.
- Other Responsibilities
- Maintain a professional and respectful environment with students, staff, and campus partners.
- Be accessible via phone, email, and in person during scheduled work hours.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by program needs.
- Uphold all university policies, the Student Code of Conduct, and CSB guidelines.
- Participate fully in professional development, assessment, and evaluation of activities related to STEP.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
- Part-time.
- 20 hours per week.
Salary Range:
- $17.95 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
- Must be a current undergraduate student at American University in good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0).
- Must be a sophomore, junior, or senior at the time of employment.
- Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness and ability to reside in university housing during the summer program.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Previous participation in STEP or similar student leadership programs.
- Experience in mentorship, peer advising, or residential programming.
- Strong event planning, budgeting, and project management skills.
- Creativity and initiative in designing community-building programming.
