Position Overview: The Student Technical Assistant plays a key role in supporting the technical execution of productions across various venues used by the Department of Theatre and Dance. This position provides essential support for the setup, operation, and maintenance of performance venues and theatrical systems within the Department of Theatre and Dance. Responsibilities include preparing spaces for productions and events, assisting with rehearsals and performances, maintaining equipment and facilities, and contributing to the overall success of departmental activities. The role requires adaptability, attention to detail, and a collaborative spirit to meet the evolving needs of live performance environments.

Job Description

30% – Venue Setup

  • Prepare performance venues to meet the specific technical and staging requirements of each production.
  • Configuring lighting, sound, seating, and other production elements to ensure readiness for rehearsals and performances.

30% – Rehearsal and Performance Support

  • Attend rehearsals and live performances as part of the running crew.
  • Operating equipment, assisting performers and production staff, and executing technical cues during shows.

20% – Venue Reset

  • Restore venues to their standard or “stock” configuration following performances. Tasks may include striking equipment, resetting systems, and general cleanup.

10% – Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance on theatrical systems and venue infrastructure, including lighting, sound, rigging, and other technical equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.

10% – Departmental Support

  • Assisting with special events, inventory management, or administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of standard theatrical operating procedures, including the ability to hang and focus lighting fixtures, program and operate lighting consoles, configure and operate audio systems, and perform other standard theatrical tasks in accordance with safety standards, as indicated on application materials.
  • Comfortable working at heights and working independently to meet the technical needs of productions.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with video production and live streaming technologies, as indicated on application materials.
  2. Experience using digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as ProTools, Audition, or similar software, as indicated on application materials.
  3. Working knowledge of QLab for audio, video, and cue-based media playback, as indicated on application materials.
  4. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to audio, lighting, video, streaming, and multimedia systems, as indicated on application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR. (2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
