Description
Supervise custodial/ Union setup operations to ensure timely and sufficient custodial/setups coverage to include: Plan, schedule and coordinate tasks, assign daily, weekly, and monthly projects. Maintain knowledge and familiarity of university facilities, university policies and procedures, FPO policies and procedures, chemicals and equipment. Oversee projects in progress and hear and resolve customer questions and complaints. Supervise custodial staff to include: interview, recommend new hires to Assistant manager, train employees, schedule staff, inspect work to maintain quality, conduct performance appraisals, hear and resolve employee questions and concerns, administer discipline according to University and FPO policies and procedures, and maintain confidential files on each employee. Coordinate safety training and enforce safety rules and regulations. Assign daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to employees. Assist Assistant Manager to include: prepare reports and compile statistics, monitor and recommend expenditures for the budget. Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, scheduling practices, etc. to ensure optimal utilization of resources. Assist in the communications with all departments to ensure customer service is foremost and their needs are met. Assist in the design, planning and execution of projects. Perform other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties
Supervise custodial/setup staff. - 50%
- Conduct job interviews and make recommendations to Management and the Office of Human Resources.
- Train employees in the proper usage of equipment, chemicals, and safety methods in compliance with University policies, procedures, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
- Conduct new employee orientations and safety meetings.
- Plan, schedules and assign employees for daily, weekly, weekend or long term tasks for scheduled or unscheduled events.
- Appraise work in progress and review completed work as to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Determine and administer disciplinary action in accordance with university and FPO policies, procedures and practices.
- Monitor sick leave abuse and approve leave requests and adjust the work schedule as needed.
- Conduct performance appraisals and maintain confidential files on each employee; hear and resolve employee questions and concerns.
- Responsible for resolving first step grievance.
- Report accidents and complete all follow-up actions with Public Safety and Human Resources.
Supervise custodial/setup operations. - 40%
- Plan, schedule, coordinate tasks and complete employee time cards/sheets.
- Distribute communications, equipment, and supplies to employees.
- Maintain knowledge and familiarity of university facilities, Staff handbook, FPO policies and procedures, chemicals and equipment.
- Communicate with area offices/customers to learn of their needs and expectations and to hear and resolve
- Customer question or concerns.
- Communicate with custodial staff to provide necessary custodial coverage, plan and schedule event coverage.
- Collaborate with various University departments, Building Managers, Deans, and Office Professionals regarding custodial issues, event set ups and needs.
- Oversee projects in progress to enforce safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure proper setup, equipment needs, and custodial coverage for all events.
- Anticipate equipment needs not specified on the contract, confirmations, or job orders.
Assist Custodial Manager and Assistant Custodial Manager. - 10%
- Create and maintain daily or weekly reports.
- Participate in and/or conduct management and staff meetings.
- Attend training seminars.
- Monitor custodial budget/credit card allocations as set forth by Custodial Manager.
- Make recommendations for budget expenditures to manager and help develop long range plans and goals.
- Make recommendations to manager for improvements to policies, procedures and scheduling practices to ensure optimal utilization of resources.
Typical Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
- Four years of custodial experience in an industrial, commercial, or educational setting.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Experience in a University, hotel, or conference center setting preferred.
- Event coordination, planning and scheduling experience preferred.
Certifications:
- Safety Tool Kit within one year.
- Carpet Care, Hard Floor Surface Care, Gym Floor Refinishing, Wall Cleaning, Upholstery Cleaning, Noah, Equipment Care training certifications as required by position are required within one year of hire.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Supervisor: plans, staffs, evaluates & directs work of employees of a work unit.
- Indirect Supervisor: delegate work of a unit to subordinate supervisors or managers.
- Regular part-time or full-time employees - 8 30%, Student Employees, including Graduate Assistants, Temporary and/or seasonal employees
Budget Responsibility: - 20%
- Monitor budget
- Amount of sign-off authority: $1,000
Working Hours and Days:
Tuesday - Saturday 4:30pm - 1:00am

Special Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of operations, maintenance, and repair of custodial equipment.
- Knowledge of floor care products and equipment.
- Knowledge of custodial supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Ability to train custodians on equipment and/or supplies.
Environmental Factors:
- Excessive standing and/or walking, Exposure to extreme temperatures, Exposure to fumes and/or chemicals, Exposure to heights.
Physical Requirements: Lift 50 lbs.
