Position Overview

The Department of Surgery at SUNY Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine in collaboration with Golisano, formerly Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, is seeking a dynamic and visionary pediatric surgeon to join our team as a Pediatric Surgery Faculty Member and serve as the Surgeon in Chief of Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (formerly Oishei Children’s Hospital Buffalo), Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery. This is a exceptional opportunity for an experienced leader to be a part of an established and thriving pediatric surgery division while also contributing meaningfully to clinical care, education, and research.

Highlights of this Position

  • Work in a freestanding children’s hospital affiliated with an adult facility
  • Full Service Pediatric Hospital, designated as a Level I Trauma Center
  • Cancer collaboration in a Joint Venture with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, University at Buffalo and Kaleida Health

  • Strong support team of pediatric subspecialists
  • Recent funding infusion through Golisano Foundation which will provide opportunities for expansion and growth

Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Faculty Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality surgical care to pediatric patients across a full spectrum of conditions.
  • Participate in shared call coverage, inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including neonatology, pediatric critical care, oncology, and other subspecialties.
  • Actively engage in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Participate in clinical and/or basic science research with opportunities for intradepartmental and inter-institutional collaboration.
  • Maintain a commitment to service excellence and continuous quality improvement.

Surgeon in Chief Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the strategic and operational surgical leader for all surgical subspecialties at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
  • Guide recruitment, mentorship, and professional development of Golisano surgeons and staff.
  • Oversee clinical operations, efficiency, quality, and safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with hospital and health system leadership to expand services and enhance program visibility.

Division Chief Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the strategic and operational leader for the Division of Pediatric Surgery.
  • Guide recruitment, mentorship, and professional development of division faculty and staff.
  • Establish and implement divisional goals aligned with departmental and institutional missions.
  • Oversee clinical operations, quality, and safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with hospital and health system leadership to expand services and enhance program visibility.
  • Drive innovation in pediatric surgical care delivery, education, and research.
  • Oversee the pediatric surgery fellowship which is the 7th oldest fellowship in the nation.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • M.D. or equivalent degree with completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency and pediatric surgery fellowship.
  • Board certification in Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in New York
  • Demonstrated track record of clinical excellence, teaching, and scholarly achievement.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in faculty development, team management, or program-building preferred

    1. A candidate with an understanding of balancing clinical and administrative leadership who will lead the hospital toward program expansion. One who promotes clinical research, scholarly activity, and educational initiatives across the disciplines.
  4. Growth Mindset
    1. Ability to identify and develop strategic expansion of clinical programs and services. A leader who will foster interdisciplinary collaboration to meet the evolving needs of our patient population.
  5. Recruitment and Development
    1. Familiarity and success with recruiting, mentoring, and retaining surgeons and advanced practice providers. Strong interest in mentoring and leading the charge for the professional development of the medical staff.
  6. Relationship Building
    1. Experience and proven success cultivating strong relationships with other divisions, departments, referring physicians, and community partners.
  7. Research
    1. Translational or clinical trial research. Record of successful external funding or participation in funded research programs.
  8. Strategic Leadership
    1. Developing and implementing a strategic vision for pediatric surgery at University at Buffalo and Kaleida Health

Appointment and Compensation:

Looking for a Full Professor or Associate Professor level with a clear path to promotion to full professor, tenure track available for qualified candidates.
