Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or related field. Two (2) years of applicable programming experience to include Linux and/or other system administration experience (graduate level student work experience may be considered). HPC cluster management skills (i.e. maintaining large storage devices, a job queuing system, networking devices, etc.), and user support experience. Experience with Apache or similar web hosting service. Skilled with scripting using shell, Python, or other programming languages. Experience with upgrading, maintaining and troubleshooting computer hardware. Experience with web programming (i.e. HTML, CSS coding, JavaScript, PHP.) and website and other interfaces reconstruction maintenance, updates.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or related field. Familiarity with Mathematica and/or MatLab. Experience with Linux file systems, such as XFS, ZFS, RAID etc. Skilled with RedHat Linux or related varieties. Familiarity with high performance parallel storage systems, such as Lustre, GPFS, HA cluster, Pacemaker, Corosync, etc. Experience with programming using C/C++, R, or Fortran, and use of compilers like Makefile. Experience with Slurm (job queuing) management. Working knowledge of LaTex. Experience of AWS Cloud web hosting LightSail. Experience with Ethernet networking.

Brief Description of Duties: The Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology is a hub for research at Stony Brook University aiming to advance biology and medicine through discoveries in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computational science. To facilitate the Laufer Center's operations, the Systems Administrator among other duties will provide day-to-day oversight, integration, computing system administration & maintenance to ensure that the Laufer Center's HPC and other clusters are up and running and upgraded as needed to meet the Center's operational and peripheral needs, and administrative support is provided to Center's researchers for their computing and interfaced implementation needs. Troubleshooting and multitasking abilities; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently and to quickly react to problem situations are essential to this position. The ideal candidate will have the willingness to learn and stay current with evolving and new technology.

  • Assist the director and other lab groups with computing support, including but not limited to AWS Cloud LightSail web apps administration, Linux system administration, maintenance and upgrade of application programming interfaces (APIs), servers and other web resources open to the broader scientific community.
  • Support the on-site HPC Linux GPU cluster with Slurm queuing system.
  • Maintain RAID NFS storage, Lustre storage, 100GbE Ethernet networking.
  • Write shell scripts and use other programming languages as required, help the Center researchers troubleshoot software and APIs.
  • Website management, upgrades, redesign when needed, and seamless and updated maintenance and efficient communication.
  • Purchase computer-related supplies, hardware and software, reconfigure and upgrade hardware, install and upgrade software for Linux, Mac and Windows platforms.
  • Maintain the Center's printing services, and support AV systems in the offices, meeting rooms and lecture hall. Provide network security management for the Center.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. Resume/CV and cover letter should be included with the online application.
