Systems Librarian

Job Summary/Basic Function

The systems librarian is responsible for the management, configuration, and maintenance of the library services platform (LSP) and other library technologies. This role ensures the efficient operation of library systems used by students in their education and research pursuits and supports the library's mission of providing access to exceptional resources and services. This includes understanding and identifying business problems and opportunities, determining potential solutions and assess feasibility related to Wright State's Library technology needs.The Systems Librarian oversees the implementation, maintenance, support, and enhancement of various library technologies, systems and integrations. The systems librarian is responsible for gathering and understanding the business needs of stakeholders, supporting designing, planning, implementing and measuring the success of projects involving technology, often involving multi-functional groups. This role is pivotal in delivering innovative library services and ensuring access to the library's comprehensive online information resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, information systems or a related field with 5 years of experience in a library setting OR Master's Degree in information technology, computer science, information systems, library science or a related field with 2 years of experience in a library setting.
  • At least 2 years' experience with ILS systems such as Alma/Primo VE or other library management systems and knowledge of and experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of information technology principles, processes, systems, and standards, including usability, accessibility, and emerging web technologies.
  • Experience participating in systems projects or implementing new technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to and manage shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
  • Extensive experience with databases and related data storage systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong planning and organization skills.
  • Good judgment, diplomacy, and objectivity to effectively and appropriately make decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited institution.
  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Experience with access and authentication processes using SAML and EZproxy.
  • Knowledge of basic programming concepts and languages such as Python, R, Javascript, SQL, JSON, XSL, and XML.

Essential Functions and percent of time

40% Business Analysis and User Acceptance

  • Work with university stakeholders to assimilate knowledge and understanding of applications used by the University Libraries, understanding business processes and use cases
  • Serve as the functional system administrator for library systems and services including the LSP, user authentication, and e-resource access.
  • Lead the design, testing, deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, administration, and evaluation of multiple essential discoveries; delivering and inventorying systems in the library's Ex Libris application portfolio
  • Research, evaluate, recommend, test, and implement new technologies in collaboration with librarians and library staff.
  • Oversee the daily operation of the library's LSP, including configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Integrate library systems with other institutional systems and platforms.
  • Lead and participate in projects related to the implementation of new technologies and systems.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for library systems and procedures.
  • Analyze, define, and document functional and technical requirements for data mapping, workflows, business processes and system integration specifications.
  • Develop and update content for the library's website in collaboration with Library employees.

35% Functional Expert for University Libraries Systems

  • Provide technical support and training to library staff and affiliated library staff on the use of library systems and technologies
  • Collaborate with library staff to improve user experience and access to electronic resources.
  • Collaborate with Special Collections & Archives to harvest metadata from CORE Scholar and ArchivesSpace to allow for resource discovery by students and faculty.
  • Serve as a member of the library's Web Advisory Team, ensuring usability and accessibility of library resources in compliance with federal accessibility standards.
  • Troubleshoot, research and solve technical and functional problems. Recommend solutions or alternative methods for resolving issues with business processes.

10% Support and Troubleshooting

  • Liaise with vendors for system support, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
  • Responsible for ensuring module changesand upgrades, are planned, tested and successfully implemented.
  • Serve as lead contact with library systems vendors and maintain excellent vendor relations for troubleshooting, functionality and system upgrades, and assessment of new projects.
  • Ensure data integrity across student success data through collaboration with the institution's Data Governance Committee and Data Stewardship groups. Ensure solutions are built and maintained so as to ensure data integrity.
  • Understand and ensure permissions and access are properly maintained for system functions and data access across the portfolio of applications used by the library. Serve as the technical liaison with user and security administration groups.

10% Technology Compliance

  • Serve as Wright State's Lead Implementer for OhioLINK, providing local coordination and compliance with statewide library technology initiatives.
  • Attend regular meetings and liaise with OhioLINK regarding technology and access issues.
  • Communicate regularly with other OhioLINK libraries for information and idea sharing.

5% Other Related Duties

  • Stay current with trends and developments in library technology and systems.
  • Maintain knowledge of, and engage in, continuous professional development to keep up with trends in library systems, emerging technologies, digital tools, and software solutions.
  • Participating in activities and professional service for professional development and incorporate new ideas and technologies in service to the campus and Library missions.
  • Serving on departmental, university, and professional committees as appropriate.

Working Conditions
Regular office environment, normal work schedule is 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

Position FTE: 100%

Minimum Annual or Hourly Rate: $60,000

Salary Band: UC S05
