Employment Type: Non-Exempt, Full-time


Position Summary:

We are seeking a research assistant to support a neuroscience research program and zebrafish research at our institution. Responsibilities include conducting and coordinating research and assisting with zebrafish and mouse husbandry. The role requires organizing research projects, overseeing and training research students, and general laboratory maintenance. Proficiency in molecular biology techniques (microscopy, protein biochemistry, genotyping/PCR, etc.), cell culture, and animal experimentation is essential (or a willingness to learn). This position involves working closely with members of the Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) and other zebrafish researchers to ensure proper care and use of zebrafish in research. The candidate must multitask, be detail-oriented, and work well independently and in a team environment. Evaluation will be based on productivity in advancing projects and effective teamwork.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Experimental Techniques:
  • Proficiently perform at least 4-6 experimental techniques (e.g., tissue culture, western blotting, PCR, biochemical and behavioral assays).
  • Willing and able to learn new molecular/animal biology techniques.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and training others in mastered experimental techniques.
  1. Project Data Management:
  • Maintain project data (collection, logging, entry, analysis, reporting) to support lab and student research activities.
  • Assist or manage the preparation of posters, manuscripts, and meeting presentations.
  • Present research findings at meetings.
  • Perform literature reviews as needed to support research projects.
  1. Lab Maintenance and Safety:
  • Oversee general lab maintenance and safety to ensure smooth operation of research.
  • Prepare equipment, special components, and reagents for experiments.
  • Perform general equipment monitoring and maintenance, including shared zebrafish equipment.
  1. Zebrafish Husbandry:
  • Coordinate and oversee zebrafish husbandry specific to research, including breeding, monitoring health, and tracking overall care.
  1. Training:
  • Train students and staff on shared zebrafish experimental equipment.
  • Conduct general training and communication for students and staff involved in zebrafish research.
  • Organize monthly zebrafish user meetings and communicate effectively with all zebrafish users (currently two labs) and the LAR.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience is required.
  • Two to four years of relevant experience is preferred.

Working Conditions:


Work requires minimal physical exertion. Ability to lift and carry 10-20 pounds, stoop, reach, stand, walk, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodations.

 

Salary Range: $36,000 - $42,000

 

 

The referenced salary range is based on PCOM good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
