Minimum QualificationsQualifications:
- Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
- Relevant teaching experience in a laboratory setting.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic Biology Lab Instructors for our non-major biology labs (BIO 1203, 1204, 1205) at the Hickory campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing four lab sections per week and ensuring a stimulating and supportive environment for our students.
License/Certification RequiredN/ADescription of the Department or UnitThe Biology department has 32 full-time doctoral level faculty members, approximately 950 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students. For further information: http://biology.appstate.edu/.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPreparation for Instruction: Attend weekly prep meetings led by the Lab Supervisor, prepare for classroom instruction, and actively engage in the discussion of lab content and troubleshooting.
Lab Operations: Facilitate the setup and breakdown of labs, troubleshoot equipment issues, ensure labs are adequately stocked, and mediate any student or instructor queries.
Laboratory Instruction: Teach laboratory sections and actively engage in the dissemination of lab content and exercises.
Student Engagement and Support: Provide guidance and support to students to enhance their understanding and application of biological concepts. Hold office hours and maintain consistent email correspondence to support and guide students.
Assessment and Grading: Evaluate student performance and provide timely and constructive feedback. Efficiently grade assignments with a 1-2 week turnaround time, utilizing provided grading guides.

See Minimum Qualifications.ABD DescriptionABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate’s salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position.
