Description

McCourt School of Public Policy, Faculty Director for EMPL (Executive Master in Policy Leadership), FTNTL Position

Background

The McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University is a top-ranked public policy school located in the center of the policy world in Washington, D.C.. Our mission is to teach our students to design, analyze, and implement smart policies and put them into practice in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, in the U.S. and around the world. The McCourt School paused its Executive Master in Policy Leadership (EMPL) program in 2022 to enable us to be in a better position to take advantage of our new location on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus. We are relaunching the EMPL program, and we will have our first class of new students begin the program in the Summer of 2025. We are seeking a Faculty Director for this program to guide its future success.

The EMPL is a 30-credit, interdisciplinary degree program that interweaves economics and political science with public policy and administration to educate seasoned professionals (at least ten years of experience) about the dynamics of policymaking.

The aim of the program is to give students the knowledge and skills to be effective policy leaders. We envision that many of our prospective students will have advanced careers in particular sectors without a firm grounding in public policy. The goal of the EMPL program is to equip students with the skillset to leverage their professional experience in a dynamic and everchanging policy environment.

The EMPL curriculum consists of eight required classes and two electives. Courses are offered in-person and are structured as one-week intensive courses. A full-time student can complete the program in 14 months (with the classes scheduled approximately every 6-8 weeks – two in the first summer, three each semester, and two in the final summer). Students may also complete the program over 29 months with two classes in the first summer, one course each semester and summer for the following year, and culminating in two courses in the final (third) summer and one course in the final fall semester.

The curriculum includes a mix of academic and applied classes with opportunities for experiential learning. The advantage of the McCourt School for this degree is that it will provide students with the skills and opportunities that will enable them to be successful in navigating the politics, ethics, and economics of policy and decision making. Like all our students, EMPL students will also refine, strengthen, and graduate with all of McCourt’s essential foundational skills. They will gain these skills through their curriculum, networking, activities, and experiences only available in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

The McCourt School is seeking a full-time non-tenure line (FTNTL) Teaching Professor to lead the EMPL program. The position’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing the academic standards of the program with the support of McCourt School leadership and staff.
  • Developing co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities to enhance the professional training of EMPL students in addition to their classroom work.
  • Engaging with potential partners to build the market for the EMPL degree, including interacting with employers and organizations who might want to send cohorts of students to the program.
  • Serving as the main faculty contact for prospective and admitted students for the degree.
  • Overseeing and aiding the faculty who teach in the program to ensure that academic rigor of the program.
  • In addition to overseeing the EMPL program, we anticipate that the EMPL faculty director will teach courses (either week-long intensive classes or semester classes) in our degree programs based on the faculty director’s area of expertise.

Requirements

  • PhD or terminal degree required in public policy or social science
  • Experience in public policy and/or social sciences teaching preferred
  • Ability and experience in developing executive programs
  • Academic and practitioner experience in public policy
  • Strong interpersonal/relationship building skills

Applying

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, a current CV, and the names of three professional references. In addition, applicants should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and address their experience with executive education and/or programs for senior professionals. Review of application will begin on August 15th. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by 26 August 2024.

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position is $93,778 - $107,654, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation for this position. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
