Teaching Associate, Department of Ophthalmology, Optometrist

The University of Washington Department of Ophthalmology is currently recruiting for a full-time optometrist. This appointment will be at the rank of Teaching Associate. This position will be based at a UW Medicine Primary Care location and Harborview Medical Center. This position is without tenure due to funding and is a multi-year appointment with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Anticipated start date is December 1, 2025. This is a 1.0 FTE full-time position.

Teaching Associates are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period, meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The Optometrist will provide primary eye care for patients in the UW Medicine Primary Care system and Harborview Medical Center, including management of refractive error, diagnosis of eye conditions such as screening for diabetic retinopathy, and management of conditions such as dry eye disease within the scope of Optometry. The optometrist will provide appropriate patient care under the department’s approved Optometry Standard Operating Procedures protocols.

The Optometrist will also participate in the teaching mission of the Department of Ophthalmology and may be directly responsible for the education of nurses, medical assistants, and technicians, and may work with and teach ophthalmology residents and ophthalmic subspecialty fellows.

The base salary range for this position will be $130,000-$140,000 a year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Candidates must hold an OD degree and have a minimum of one year of experience as an optometrist. Experience in working with an ophthalmology team and managing patients with ophthalmic disease is desirable. Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the State of Washington.
