Teaching Associates for Creative Writing (0.5 FTE, 3-year Fixed Term)
The University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) delivers high quality and distinctive education for adult learners on a part-time basis, for personal enrichment or professional development. PACE aims to ensure that the expertise and resources of the University of Cambridge are made available to all students, irrespective of their previous educational achievements.
PACE at the University of Cambridge has a growing reputation for the teaching of Creative Writing and an extremely strong record of alumni success. A number of graduates of our courses have gone on to achieve success, won writing prizes and worked on shows produced on screen and stage. Many former students have progressed to doctoral study.
We wish to appoint two part-time Teaching Associates to contribute to the expanding MSt in Creative Writing and to our portfolio of award-bearing and short course creative writing programmes.
PACE creative writing teaching is delivered both in person and online. Weekend courses and summer courses are delivered in Cambridge while undergraduate award-bearing courses and short courses are delivered via online provision. The MSt in Creative Writing is delivered on a low-residency model with teaching occurring over regularly scheduled weeks in Cambridge. The roles will be compatible with hybrid working but there will be an expectation of in-person attendance as required.
The ideal candidates will be writers with established records of publication who have broad experience of teaching creative writing in a higher education. It is desirable though not essential that candidates should hold a PhD or MFA in Creative Writing.
We are seeking candidates with the following specialisms:
One Teaching Associate (0.5 FTE) specialist in fiction with additional expertise in either creative non-fiction, poetry or screenwriting.
One Teaching Associate (0.5 FTE) specialist in two or more of the following genres: creative non-fiction, poetry or screenwriting.
The successful applicants will have experience of contributing to curriculum design and assessment in creative writing. They will have a student-centred approach to teaching and experience of supervising students from diverse backgrounds. They will be familiar with the latest developments in teaching creative writing, including online delivery, and will enjoy being part of a close-knit teaching team but will also be capable of leading courses and initiatives. Experience of teaching adults and mature students is desirable and a commitment to lifelong learning essential.
Ideally, they will have a higher degree, preferably a doctoral-level in a relevant specialist subject area, and a track record of recent publications (and productions in the case of candidates specialist in screenwriting). They will be committed to further developing knowledge of their own subject areas and to maintaining a creative practice in their fields of expertise.
They will have extensive connections in the worlds of literature and academia. They will also have the ability to promote the Institutes reputation for excellence in teaching creative writing in the UK and abroad, and through the University of Cambridge Centre for Creative Writing.
