The School of Drama within the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University invites applicants for a full-time Teaching Track Faculty position in Movement at the assistant or associate professor rank to join our BFA Acting/Music Theatre program. This position is Pittsburgh-based and begins August 2026. Base salary is $70,000 to $75,000 with negotiation based on rank and commensurate with experience and includes a full benefits package.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a terminal degree in theater, drama, or a related field(s), or have equivalent professional experience, and demonstrate an excellent ability to teach movement and physical approaches to actor training.

The ideal candidate will have three years teaching experience in a higher education setting or equivalent experience leading workshops, master classes, or residencies within a university-level or professional institution. They will possess a strong record of teaching excellence and a commitment to mentoring students.

This position requires teaching a variety of approaches to movement, physical acting, and embodiment practices. An in-depth understanding and command of teaching Lecoq-based actor training and devising are essential. Additional experience and skill in intimacy choreography and improvisation are strongly recommended. Experience in other approaches/disciplines such as, physical theatre, Grotowski, physical comedy, stage combat, yoga, Michael Chekhov, etc. are also welcomed.

We seek a dynamic and student-centered teacher who can offer physical training to all levels of our student population, especially: Movement II (Mask, Commedia, Clown) Movement IV (Devising). Partnering with other acting/music theater faculty members, the ideal candidate will possess the adaptability to work within the current curriculum while also broadening and deepening its scope.

Additional expertise or experience with musical theater and its multiple subject areas is a plus, as the appointee will teach undergraduate Acting and Music Theatre majors.

In addition to teaching, it is expected that the successful candidate will engage in other duties such as

  • Mentor, coach, and advise students in the School of Drama
  • Serve as advisor/movement coach for productions within the School of Drama
  • Administrative service including School, College and/or University level committees
  • Engage in the life and events of the school
  • Maintain and advance educational and/or professional practices
