Technical Officer (IMOS Ocean Radar Facility)

Job Description:

  • Be part of a nationally significant marine observing network supporting world-class coastal science.
  • Work hands-on with high-frequency radar systems across Australia’s coastline.
  • Full-time (1.0 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis until 30th June 2027.
  • Base salary range: $95,231 – $100,643 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

This is an opportunity to join the IMOS Ocean Radar Facility within the Coastal Oceanography group at UWA. The Facility operates shore-based High Frequency radar systems, including WERA and CODAR SeaSonde, to measure surface currents at sites around Australia.

The Coastal Oceanography group undertakes research on coastal physical processes and their influence on biological, geological, and climate-related processes across the continental shelf, nearshore zone, and estuaries, using field observations, remote sensing, and numerical modelling.

Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) was established in 2007 to provide sustained ocean observations around Australia and to make those data openly available to the Australian and international marine and climate science community.

This role supports a nationally distributed technical observing network and requires a combination of hands-on field capability, practical systems troubleshooting, and strong operational follow-through.

About the opportunity

  • Support the operation, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of high-frequency ocean radar systems (WERA and CODAR SeaSonde) that deliver nationally significant coastal data across Australia.
  • Work hands-on across field-based and operational environments, applying systematic fault-finding, preventative maintenance and technical problem-solving to ensure reliable, high-quality data delivery.
  • Collaborate with researchers, site caretakers, contractors and suppliers to support a distributed marine observing network, contributing to world-class ocean and climate science.

About you

  • Practical experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting electronic, RF, telecommunications or field-based technical systems
  • Confidence using test equipment relevant to electronic or RF systems
  • The ability to work independently, show initiative and manage competing priorities
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to technical documentation and reporting
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a small, distributed team
