Job Description

Assistant Sacristans support the logistical preparation and cleanup for Masses, Weddings, and other liturgical services held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and various campus locations serving the University, the Congregation of Holy Cross, and the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. They assist the University Sacristan by maintaining liturgical items-such as polishing metalware, replacing candles, and coordinating special seating arrangements.

Assistant Sacristans primarily work on Fridays and Saturdays, including home football game weekends, and may also be scheduled during University breaks and holidays. This is a temporary, on-call position, averaging approximately 60 hours per month.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Set up and clean up for Masses and other services in the Basilica. Assist with the supervision and training of student sacristans.
• Care and maintenance of liturgical items, including metalware, candles, etc.
• Support for University Liturgies outside of the Basilica (ie: Masses in the Log Chapel or Purcell Pavilion)
• Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• 6 to 12 months of experience
• Strong knowledge of the Catholic Faith and liturgy
• Driver's license

Hourly Rate: Up to $20/hour
