Temporary Pool - Fire Academy Training Assistant

Monterey Peninsula College's fire Academy, established in 2002, offers quality training to those who want to become firefighters. Fire Academy training assistants are needed during wildland, ventilation, live fire, and other training activities to support the lead faculty member in ensuring academy students are performing tasks in a safe and proper way. Temporary employees are occasionally needed for substitute assignment. Example of Duties

Under the leadership of the MPC Fire Protection Technology Coordinator and the Associate Dean of Career Education, the Fire Academy Training Assistant is responsible for providing support to the Fire Academy lead faculty during wildland, ventilation, live fire, and other training/testing activities, supporting safe and proper practices by academy students.

Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to and appreciation for, the academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff attending or working on a community college campus.

Qualifications

Ability to: work effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise and firmness; demonstrate skills associated with the job in assigned subject area; communicate satisfactorily in both oral and written form; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Knowledge of: the skills and abilities relevant to the area as needed to fulfill requirements of the job.

Minimum Qualifications
  • CSFM FF I certification
  • Completion of CSFM Accredited Fire Academy
  • Current or Previous Employment as Part- Time / Reserve Firefighter
Desired Qualifications (not required)
  • CSFM FF II certification
  • Completion of MPC Fire Academy
  • Certification as a CSFM Registered Skills Evaluator
  • Certification as a CSFM Instructor
  • Current or Previous Employment as a Full-Time Firefighter

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Heavy physical effort, which may include frequent standing, walking, and lifting or moving of heavy objects up to 100 pounds, working from ladders up to 35'. Frequent activities requiring full body exertion. Indoor/outdoor work environment with some exposure to weather extremes.

Hours to be determined by MPC Fire Protection Technology Coordinator at time of assignment.
