FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) POSITION STATUS: EXEMPT

10-Month Tenure Track Position

COMPENSATION:

Initial salary placement ranges from $67,886 to $106,308, based upon education and experience. The current faculty salary schedule includes five classes and twenty steps with a maximum annual salary of $142,425.

Representative Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Primary responsibilities include preparation and delivery of course materials required for teaching laboratory and lecture sections of General Chemistry/ Organic Chemistry; may include other courses appropriate to experience and education. Successful candidates will have background in chemistry and documented success in the use of educational technologies in the teaching and learning process. The assignment may include courses that are offered in the evenings and on weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructional assignment includes lecture and/or laboratory classes in the discipline.
  • Assignments include, but are not limited to, conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes, assessments, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
  • Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
  • Participation in academic discipline/department decision making process and work regarding curriculum, program development and other matters are expected of all department faculty.
  • Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
  • Participate in assessment, evaluation, and planning of Student Learning Outcomes and Program Learning Outcomes, Program Review, and Curriculum Development.
  • Create a learning environment that fosters student success, using different teaching modalities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Teach in accordance with departmental course outlines and design instructional activities to promote student success.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in program and curriculum development and participate in other departmental meetings and projects may include possible mentorship.
  • Teach scheduled classes on-campus and in-person and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Serve on academic senate and shared governance committees as necessary to support and enrich instructional programs.
  • Promote the success of a diverse student population through careful preparation of course materials and effective teaching methodologies.
  • Comply with district policies and procedures in the performance of all duties by timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities including holding weekly office hours and being available to assist students as required.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters in chemistry OR Bachelors in chemistry or biochemistry AND Masters in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry OR the equivalent.

Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience teaching college-level General Chemistry courses.

(All degree and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions)

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of chemistry and or organic chemistry class
  • Knowledge of Distance Educations Learning
  • Knowledge of developing course syllabi
  • Knowledge of fostering inclusive environments for student learning
  • Knowledge of integrating accessible practices into course design and teaching strategies
  • Knowledge and ability to teach and support students across multiple modalities including, online, hybrid, remote, HyFlex, and correspondence while maintaining engagement and accessibility.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain compliance with all third-party accrediting bodies by keeping required credentials, certifications, and regulatory standards current when applicable

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to teach lab and lecture sessions of general/organic chemistry
  • Ability to work effectively in person through clear communication, collaboration, and adaptability in diverse professional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain current in one's discipline through ongoing professional development, research, and engagement with emerging trends and best practices.
  • Ability to use advanced technology in the classroom
  • Ability to use Canvas or other LMS platforms
  • Ability to interact with others (faculty, staff, students, administration)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Office, classroom, lab and/or on-line environment. Position requires ability to communicate and exchange information. The assignment may include day, weekend, and/or evening classes on campus and/or at off campus locations. Position requires ability and schedule flexibility to accommodate active participation in College and Department Outreach Events such as College and Career Fairs and College and Community Presentations.
