Job Summary:

Full time (1.0 cFTE) Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) Instructor or Sr. Instructor rank position in the Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. This position will have primary responsibilities at Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) Anschutz Medical Campus on the PHM Inpatient Complex Pulmonary Team (Bronze Team), Transitional Respiratory and Airway Center for Kids (TRACK) team, and secondary responsibilities on the general medicine physician/APP inpatient teams. This position will work independently and in collaboration with pediatric hospitalist and pulmonary teams to provide high quality acute and complex care to patients with primary pulmonary conditions and high medical complexity. After two years of experience, some clinical time may also be in the Children's Hospital of Colorado Network of Care, including clinical obligations providing pediatric provider coverage at Vail Health in a remote, community hospital setting. This position will include day and nocturnist shifts and includes weekends and holidays at these locations. Additionally, in response to unforeseen crisis staffing situations this position may entail some short-term cross-coverage to other inpatient settings within CHCO.

The Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Children's Hospital Colorado is rapidly expanding, with the recruitment of some of the nation's best and brightest pediatric hospitalists. As we expand our academic, quality improvement, and educational programs, we continue to provide expert inpatient medical care for children throughout Colorado, and beyond.

Our hospitalists offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week pediatric hospitalist services at all Children's Colorado campuses and our partners with many other hospitals. We aim to provide:

  • exemplary family-centered care to our patients and families
  • seamless communication to referring community providers
  • a focus on educating fellows, residents, medical students, and advance practice provider students in the field of general pediatric hospital medicine
  • scholarship in all areas that impact inpatient pediatric care

All of our faculty members bring a strong clinical focus, while many pursue research in education and clinical hospital medicine. Our faculty also serve in administrative capacities for the University, Children's Hospital, and our partner hospitals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs direct front line care of inpatient pulmonary and complex discharge planning/coordination in collaboration with the Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine consultant service.
  • Performs direct front line care of the general medicine pediatric population of all age ranges, developmental, nutritional and physiological status in the inpatient setting.
  • The APP works independently within the multidisciplinary team to provide high quality inpatient care and disease management for a variety of pediatric inpatient conditions of varying acuity and complexity from admission through discharge, including coordination of discharge planning with case managers, social work, nurses, and other medical personnel.
  • History and physical examinations and determination of treatment plans.
  • Monitoring of illness progression and escalation of care for decompensating patients.
  • LP procedural skills and privilege maintenance (initial procedural privileging can be obtained upon employment if not already privileged).
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary care including team meetings and patient care conferences.
  • Nocturnist role: Coverage of AMC PHM complex pulmonary, coverage of transitional respiratory and airway center for kids (TRACK), and general medical inpatient teams, including admissions, transfers, stabilization of decompensating patients with in-house support provided by PHM faculty physician and APP nocturnists. No patients are admitted to TRACK overnight. Support from pulmonologist for TRACK patients will be provided by telephone/secure chat.
  • VAIL HEALTH: ED consultations for pediatric patients, stabilization of decompensating patients with potential for facilitating code situations, determination of appropriate disposition from ED or outside facility, including arranging transport, independent management of pediatric inpatients from admission through discharge with physician telehealth backup. Participation in pediatric education for Vail Health staff, as well as building and maintaining relationships within the Vail Valley healthcare community is expected.
  • Attendance and participation at monthly staff meetings is required.

Work Location: Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor of Clinical Practice or Senior Instructor of Clinical Practice based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Instructor of Clinical Practice:

Physician Assistant:

  • Graduation from an APAP approved Physician Assistant Training Program.
  • Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Colorado license will be required prior to start date.
  • BLS and PALS certification will be required prior to start date.
  • Minimum of 0-3 years of experience in general pediatrics or hospital medicine.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner:

  • Graduate of an accredited BSN program.
  • APN licensure and a master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • BLS and PALS certification will be required prior to start date.
  • Pediatric Nursing Certification Board certificate or other comparable certification required.
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification required.
  • Ability to obtain Prescriptive Authority in the State of Colorado. Will need to qualify for and obtain prescriptive authority within one year of beginning position.
  • Minimum of 0-3 years of experience in general pediatrics or hospital medicine

Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice: [Similar qualifications with 1-5 years experience]

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in pediatrics.
  • Current CO state prescriptive authority.
  • Inpatient experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of a variety of common pediatric and adolescent inpatient conditions.
  • Superior customer service, communication, organizational and prioritization, problem solving, and collaboration skills are necessary.
  • Expertise and training in history and physical examinations and determination of treatment plans necessary.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Instructor: $111,000 - $119,000

Senior Instructor: $119,000 - $131,000
