TRIO Learning Specialist (Full-Time, 12 Month Position)
The TRIO Learning Specialist is a member of the TRIO Program for Student Achievement team, providing academic, career, transfer, financial aid, and personal advising to students with documented disabilities. The role supports objectives of good academic standing, retention, progress to graduation, and transfer to four-year institutions.
Essential Job Functions
- Instruct in study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
- Provide academic and career advising, assist in course selection and registration.
- Support students in accessing and implementing accommodations.
- Conduct intake interviews, review application materials, and create customized service plans.
- Participate in program-specific recruitment activities.
- Outreach to students experiencing academic difficulties and make referrals.
- Assist with financial aid and scholarship applications.
- Maintain student advisor logs and record contacts using relevant databases.
- Manage and implement the TRIO PSA Early Awareness process.
- Stay aware of issues supporting students with disabilities in post-secondary settings.
- Attend training sessions and meetings.
- Develop and present skill-building workshops on topics like time management and resume writing.
- Provide support for financial literacy.
- Write letters of recommendation.
- Offer comprehensive transfer planning, including campus visits and college fairs.
- Assist students with writing requirements such as essays and resumes.
- Conduct exit interviews.
- Develop collaborative relationships with college offices and external agencies.
- Provide direct services as a case manager.
- Offer 1:1 support in metacognitive strategies, time management, study skills, and self-advocacy.
- Build advising relationships and monitor student progress.
Job Requirements
Master's degree required in Special Education, Education Psychology, Counseling, or related field. At least 1 year of related disability services experience in a secondary or postsecondary environment. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated understanding of ADAAA/Section 504 of the Rehab Act and knowledge of disability documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of outreach and intervention services for individuals with disabilities. Ability to develop tutoring methods for diverse learners. Proficiency in working in-person and online. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Bilingual skills are a plus.
Additional Information
This position is grant-funded and contingent on ongoing funding. Salary starts at $70,929 with a Master's Degree, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, tuition benefits, and more. Location: Lowell campus with occasional travel to Bedford. Hours: 37.5 per week, with eligibility for up to one day of telework. Expected start date: October 2025. Application deadline: September 10, 2025.
