TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Academic Advisor

Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, 11-month position as a TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Academic Advisor. BBCC's TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program is a federally funded initiative by the U.S. Department of Education designed to help Big Bend first-generation, low-income, and disabled students succeed in college. Through a high-touch, proactive approach, the program provides students with the support they need to thrive. This includes holistic, comprehensive academic advising, academic tutoring, financial literacy workshops, financial aid information and assistance, and college campus visits. The TRIO Student Support Services Academic Advisor provides academic, career, and transfer assistance to TRIO students, supporting their academic journey and the overall program.

This position reports to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services and works closely with Counseling, Financial Aid, Admissions/Registration, Workforce Education Services, and Accommodations and Accessibility Services to provide services to all eligible participants.

This is a full-time, 11-month, grant-funded position. This position is dependent upon continued grant funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Primary responsibilities include but may not be limited to the following:

STUDENT SUPPORT AND CASELAOD MANAGEMENT:
  • Provide individualized advising to students on academic, personal, career, financial aid, economic literacy, and transfer planning.
  • Maintain a caseload of program participants by assessing individual needs and providing services and activities that promote academic success.
  • Assist students in completing scholarship applications, financial aid forms, and college/university applications.
  • Provide program participants with information and referrals to appropriate college student programs, departments, community resources, and program-sponsored online tutoring.
PROGRAM SUPPORT:
  • Assist with recruitment, selection, and orientation of new program participants.
  • Lead workshops on topics such as study skills, financial literacy, and transfer planning.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of the programs transfer summer bridge program.
  • Coordinate and supervise four-year college campus visits, academic enrichment activities, and cultural events.
  • Assist with data management, surveys, and program evaluation.
  • Disseminate information about the TRIO SSS program to the campus community.
  • Participate in college-wide activities such as new student registration and serve on committees focused on improving student success for traditionally underrepresented populations.
DATA & ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain timely and accurate student caseload records/files, including contact logs, case notes, academic progress, financial aid pace of progression, and other relevant documentation.
  • Assist with data management, surveys, and program evaluation to assess student progress, program effectiveness, and compliance.
OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, trainings, and professional affiliations to keep apprised of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensure no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of SDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

  • Bachelors degree in counseling, social work, education, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • One or more years of professional experience assisting students in the target population (first generation, financially disadvantaged, and/or differently-abled students) and/or individuals from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bicultural experience
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to program participants.
  • Previous experience working in an educational setting.
