Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The UMOJA Counselor/Coordinator will be dedicated to the coordination and enhancement of cultural and educational experiences of African American, Black, and other students within the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The UMOJA Counselor/Coordinator serves as a generalist and a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of African American, Black and other students. This entails providing counseling services related to transfer, vocational/occupational programs, career and academic skills development from a student centered and culturally sustaining lens. The Counselor/Coordinator will have direct oversight of program outreach and retention efforts, learning community development, building community among students, along with faculty peers, MIS data reporting responsibilities, act as campus liaison for the UMOJA Community, and assist the Campus community with understanding their role in supporting and facilitating the success outcomes of African American and Black Students at Grossmont College.

Grossmont College has a dedicated space where students from various student support programs such as Puente, Justice Scholars, UMOJA, etc. are located. The UMOJA Counselor/Coordinator will have the opportunity, with their faculty peers, to help envision how this space evolves to better support our students.

The Counselor/Coordinator assumes responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for assisting in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes, program review and planning, and participation in department activities.

Contract Counselors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that result in the educational growth of UMOJA students. The Counselor/Coordinator will actively participate on campus committees that support student success and achievement and within the broader community by taking a leadership role in campus, community, and professional organizations. This position may include a combination of professional and student-centered overnight conferences and field trips. Grossmont College is strongly committed to providing open access and serving a diverse student population. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in educational, career, and personal counseling at a community college, university or clinical setting.
  • Experience providing program planning for professionals and student staff.
  • Experience advising African American, Black, and other students about certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements.
  • Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling.
  • Ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of, and ability to validate the intersectional and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity and other backgrounds of students from throughout the Black diaspora and other community college students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with UMOJA or a related program or 2 years of experience working in other public or private agencies serving special populations in pursuit of higher education attainment.
  • Experience providing supervision and training for professionals and student staff.
  • Experience teaching career planning, college success, or other personal development courses at the post-secondary level.
  • An understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors contributing to both the barriers to success for Black, African American, and other students and the conditions to be facilitated under which these students thrive at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships between campus programs and community agencies as they pertain to Black and African American student success within the California Community College system.
  • Experience that demonstrates active participation in community and professional organizations and institutions of higher education.
  • An understanding of current theories and best practices related to supporting student success in the areas of basic skills, retention, academic goal completion, and transfer for Black and African American students.
