Department: 250101 - Libraries
Location: Raleigh, NC
Essential Job Duties:
This position is part of the Learning Spaces and Services Department within the Student Success Division and has three primary areas of responsibility: supporting students and faculty through instructional services, assisting patrons in person at the Ask Us desk and online, and helping foster student belonging through outreach work.
Digital Teaching & Learning
The University Library Specialist (ULS) in this position is a core member of the Undergraduate Teaching, Learning, & Outreach team, which supports early-career undergraduate students through in-person and online instruction. The team introduces students to fundamental concepts in information literacy (e.g., understanding, finding, and evaluating academic research) and to the Libraries spaces, services, and resources critical to their academic success.
In this role, the ULS delivers in-person instruction and works closely with the Digital Teaching & Learning Librarian who directs our online learning curriculum as well as our suite of videos and interactive tutorials. With the opportunity for creative input, the ULS contributes to the development of engaging and effective digital learning experiences, exploring innovative ways to present information literacy concepts that resonate with students. The ULS is also responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the usage of our online instructional materials to guide improvements, retire outdated content, and create new resources.
Instructional technologies used in this position may include but are not limited to: Google Suite, Articulate Rise and/or StoryLine, Padlet, VoiceThread, Moodle, PlayPosit, H5P, and screencapture or tutorial creation software.
Outreach
As a member of the Undergraduate Teaching, Learning and Outreach team, the person in this position will represent the Libraries at occasional outreach events. These events provide an opportunity to introduce prospective and newly enrolled students to campus, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported in the Libraries. The person in this role will engage with students, helping them connect with key library resources that will be essential to their academic success.
Public Service
This position provides patron services to the campus community both in person at the Ask Us desk and remotely through online support. Responsibilities include providing basic research and reference support, guidance on building navigation, and technology troubleshooting with library-lended or -maintained devices. This role also involves supervising student employees at service points to ensure smooth operations. Additionally, the person in this position will collaborate with colleagues across the Student Success Division to maintain consistently high-quality customer service. Observations from these interactions-particularly regarding areas where students struggle-will help inform ongoing curriculum development to better support undergraduate learning.
This position is open for current NC State Employees only, permanent or temporary.
