Overview

This position will provide necessary security monitoring for special collection library spaces. Initially, there will be responsibility for Reading Rooms, classrooms, delivery and transport paths, storage areas, entrances/exits, exteriors and exhibit spaces but the individual facilities and areas within these facilities will expand over time. There will be non-special collections areas also monitored by this employee. This position may also be responsible for monitoring, coordinating, responding to and reporting information from access control, alarm systems, fire systems, environmental systems, visitor management systems, document report and incident report systems, tour systems, key management systems, intercom systems and other security and non-security related systems. This position will be trained for all security officer positions within the Beinecke Library.

Monitor spaces in multiple locations using a complex video surveillance system. Responsible for operating and monitoring security alarm panels, access control systems, environmental systems, fire systems, key management systems, visitor management systems, and other security related systems. Coordinate dispatch of security or other personnel to alarm or trouble locations. Check for suspicious occurrences and report all violations promptly. Make notifications to alarm monitoring stations, Cultural Properties, Public Safety, Yale Police, Yale Fire Marshal, security/fire vendors, supervisors and others. Understand and remain current on all security policies, procedures, rules and regulations at all Beinecke facilities. Communicate and enforce all rules in a calm and professional manner. Remain in constant communication with other officers on site to disseminate and receive information throughout the day. Maintain logs and records of occurrences, complete necessary paperwork, and use computer terminals, tablets or cellphone-based applications to input and retrieve data. Manage email, perform basic usage of scheduling and document software, accept calendar proposals and perform basic computer functions. Serve as a member of the building’s Emergency response team. Learn all emergency evacuation routes and procedures and be able to execute instructions under stressful situations.

Complete an extensive training program and testing process for control room certification, with ongoing training as needed. Grow with the department with participation in on-going In-Service and training programs for all current and future Security posts and equipment as well as training to improve the quality of service provided to Beinecke. Will be required to become proficient on any and all future security-related equipment and software. Will be required to work overtime hours to meet department needs. May be required to attend training that is outside of scheduled work hours. Required to become CPR / First Aid / AED certified. Perform all other safety and security related duties as instructed by supervisors. In addition to all control room duties, this position will be required to become fully qualified for all other security posts within this unit. Operate a state of the art control room environment with multiple duties. Operate main desk locations with multiple duties. Perform inspections of all carried items, including personal bags and materials, of anyone departing from a secure area. Provide escort in secure areas. Trained to perform tours of facilities to ensure the personal safety of staff, visitors, and property. Regulate access in highly secure, controlled areas. Provide security coverage during public and private events. Respond to alarms and other emergencies in accordance with departmental training, SOP’s and post orders. May be required to be trained for and work at multiple locations. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. May be required to work a rotational schedule that will include shifts that open and close facilities.

Note: This position will have a flexible/rotational schedule. The schedule is determined by the supervisor and may be modified from time to time to meet the changing needs of the Library and University. Security Officer positions are considered essential personnel to the Library’s operation and staff must report to work when the Library is open.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. State of Connecticut License for Security Officer (Guard Card).
  2. Superior public relations and communication skills. Must have general computer experience on Microsoft Office, email, etc.
  3. High attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to write clear, concise reports. Flexibility in schedule and day-to-day routine. Ability to multi-task. Ability to excel both independently and as a team member.
  4. Ability to maintain composure under stress. Must exhibit mature, responsible decision making, problem solving, and judgment skills. Ability to interact and communicate clearly, tactfully and effectively with a wide range of patrons, donors, students, staff and visitors.
  5. References must indicate reliable attendance and punctuality, diligent performance, accuracy and attention to detail and skill and tact in customer service.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  1. Customer service-related experience
  2. Experience in Library or Fine Arts security
  3. Experience with Security Control Rooms.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to climb stairs, endure extended periods of walking, standing or sitting. Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Enforces the University’s security rules and protects the property and safety of persons on campus. Remains constantly alert for threats to persons and to the property being protected.
  2. Maintains a security watch and safeguards areas by viewing and operating central security surveillance systems. Monitors CRT graphic screens to examine and respond to control alarms, and top detect and report street or property crimes.
  3. Acknowledges event, enters response logs and journals into computerized system, and prepares daily and historic reports used for making management decisions regarding area security status.
  4. Maintains radio and intercom communications with other Control Rooms to report suspicious activities and maintain visual surveillance of areas.
  5. Cooperates with police, fire and other authorities in reporting problems affecting safety and security of persons and property, and in preparing necessary reports.
  6. Searches data base access controls, status reports, site design screens, and elevator configurations to determine alarm locations, alarm status, and access eligibility. Updates and revises access codes and settings as necessary.
  7. Permits authorized personnel to enter property. Determines admission and records entrance of students, faculty and staff who have forgotten their I.D. cards. Arranges for Security Attendant back up when they leave their post, and monitors time spent away from post.
  8. Arranges for investigation if trouble is suspected. Will be required to fill in for Security Attendant I as staffing needs dictate. Issues and controls keys.
  9. Performs additional functions incidental to security activities.

Required Education and Experience

Four years of related work experience in security, law enforcement, or military police, and a high-school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
