Assistant Teaching Professor in Music (Co-Director of Performance) Part time

Assistant Teaching Professor in Music (Co-Director of Performance) Part time

The Faculty of Music seeks to appoint an Assistant Teaching Professor in Performance (0.3 FTE) to act as Co-Director of Performance, starting on 16 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a permanent post.

The successful candidate will be an instrumentalist with a high-profile international performing career. Their main specialism will complement that of the current Co-Director, a concert and opera singer, and will bring to the Faculty one or more areas of performance expertise that are currently underrepresented within the Cambridge music community. Applicants must have strong experience and professional standing in the performance of Western classical music.

The appointee will contribute to the Faculty's performance provision by teaching Performance seminars and related classes, focusing on aspects of performance relevant to professional practice, primarily within the Western art music tradition. They will assist in organising and delivering both curricular and extra-curricular performance activities. Responsibilities include helping curate established partnerships that provide teaching and chamber-music opportunities for talented instrumentalists, and overseeing aspects of the Faculty's instrument collection.

Working with the other Co-Director of Performance, the postholder will chair and moderate the annual recital examinations (normally involving around 120 students) and, with administrative support, manage student recitals. The role also includes outreach activities, coordination of Faculty and external performance prizes and nominations, and participation in committee and EDI work. The position is teaching-focused and does not include a research component.

Applicants should hold a Masters-level qualification in Music or have equivalent professional experience. They will be performers of high professional standing, with experience of advanced-level performance teaching and familiarity with the project-management aspects of a professional musical career. The successful candidate will need to work across a wide range of musical styles, genres, and instrumental/vocal specialisms, collaborate flexibly with the other Co-Director and administrative staff, and be available for concentrated periods during the recital season (May - June).

The Faculty of Music sits at the heart of a large network of musical study, research, and practice. It comprises 14 FTE permanent academic staff, 5 postdoctoral researchers, 22 affiliated lecturers, and 16 professional services staff, supporting around 200 undergraduates and 70 graduate students. Facilities include a professional concert hall, music library, historical instrument collection, and a Javanese gamelan. The Faculty also houses the Centre for Music and Science, a purpose-built facility with a recording studio, computer room, and research space.

Further information about the Faculty is available at: www.mus.cam.ac.uk
