General Description

This position works with the Upward Bound Program to provide advising and academic services as a career, educational, academic, and personal counselor in both group and individual settings; participates in a variety of other student activities; serves as a liaison among program participants, College faculty/staff, target high schools, parents/legal guardians, and community agencies; supports Upward Bound, a federally funded grant program ,that serves a target group of 8th through 12th-grade students from financially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds with the goal of increasing high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment.

This position is a grant position and is contingent upon availability of grant funding. Once the funds from the grant that provide funding for this position are no longer available, this position may be eliminated and the incumbent terminated without cause upon written notice to the employee.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree

Minimum (1) year work experience working with economically/educationally disadvantaged students.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge:
Speaks and writes English and another language;
Student advisement; and
Computer software including Microsoft WORD, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Skills:
Communicating, both verbally and in writing; and
Planning and organizing work.

Abilities:
Demonstrate sensitivity to needs of economically/educationally disadvantaged students;
Work with economically/educationally disadvantaged students; and
Communicate effectively with students, staff, and community.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is sedentary work which requires the person in this position to occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

This position requires the person to frequently move about the TRIO office and OCCC campus.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with students, administration, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position; must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate a computer, other office machinery, and mobile devices to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to judge, observe, and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Work is performed during office hours; extended work hours include nights, weekends, and overnight stays as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual

Post-secondary academic advising experience.

Master's degree in Counseling or related field (Education, School Counseling, Family and Child Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, etc.)

Required Training

Quarterly Compliance Training as assigned by institution
Annual Campus Security Authority (CSA) Training

Work Hours: Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during academic year. Summer Schedule Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Extended work hours to include nights, weekends, and overnight stays as required.

Job Duties (Position Specific)

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

  • Serves as advisor to high school students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program, with responsibility for providing students with general advising assistance regarding academic choices.
  • Provides motivation, support, and accountability support to students based on student's individual goals and academic performance.
  • Maintains accurate electronic and paper records for students to provide data as needed for reports.
  • Provides outreach to students via phone calls and emails to ensure connection to the program services and ensure that students are meeting program requirements.
  • Assists staff with delivering timely communication to all program participants via electronic delivery, social media, phone calls, emails, and text messages.
  • Maintains close liaison with students, their families, and high school staff.
  • Provides one-on-one coaching to students in the program around academic success and future planning.
  • Assists staff with event set up and tear down, student sign-in procedures, and event management for all Upward Bound events.
  • Assists in monitoring a tutoring program designed to supplement high school courses with the responsibility to determine student needs, schedule tutoring sessions, and monitor student progress.
  • Assists with managing students which includes developing individual academic, financial, and College plans.
  • Coaches Upward Bound students regarding realistic College choices and assists them in gaining admission into College and obtaining financial aid or other needed services.
  • Participates in selection of new students by reviewing records, interviewing students and families, and recommending a final selection.
  • Assists the Assistant Director in preparing quarterly reports on each student, describing counseling activities for the reporting period and providing specific details regarding student progress such as course schedule, grades, problems, and related matters.
  • Assists in hiring instructors for a summer residential program; interviews and recommends a final selection.
  • Assists in planning and administering a comprehensive summer program designed to provide additional academic support for students enrolled in the program, with a responsibility to assist in planning educational and counseling services and other needed services.
  • Assists with the development of marketing materials.
  • Assists TRIO Director with the annual performance report and other information requested by the College and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures)

  • Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures.
  • Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
  • Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
  • Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.
  • Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
  • This position has been identified as having significant responsibility for student and campus activities. The individual holding this position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to report crimes they become aware of to the Reporting Structure at Oklahoma City Community College. Annual CSA training is required for individuals holding this position.
