Department Summary
The Sustainable Cities Institute (SCI) is an applied think tank focusing on sustainability in cities. We work across disciplines inside and out of academia to redefine the delivery of higher education, conduct applied and policy-relevant research, and serve the public in the design and development of sustainable, resilient, and livable cities. Our work is consistently applied, multi-disciplinary, and sustainability-focused, matching the complexity of cities with the disciplinary expertise to match. We focus on everything in cities, from sustainable architecture to transportation to engaging marginalized communities to impacting the larger, relevant policy frameworks at the local and state levels.
The Urbanism Next Center at the University of Oregon conducts research and convenes partners from around the world to understand the impacts of new mobility, urban delivery, and autonomous vehicles on the built environment. Going beyond these emerging technologies, we explore the possible implications on equity, health and safety, the economy, and the environment to inform decision-making that supports community goals. Urbanism Next brings together experts from a wide range of disciplines including planning, design, development, business, and law and works with the public, private, and academic sectors to help create positive outcomes from the impending changes and challenges confronting our cities.
Urbanism Next is a rapidly evolving and changing organization with an entrepreneurial spirit and will offer opportunities for change and growth to research staff.
