ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) supports student veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and military-connected dependents in pursuing their educational goals while utilizing VA and related education benefits. The VRC provides a comprehensive range of services designed to remove barriers and promote academic success, including individualized academic counseling, assistance navigating educational benefits (such as the GI Bill®, Tuition Assistance, MyCAA, and the Cal Vet Fee Waiver), and intentional community-building opportunities.
The VRC is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment that recognizes and honors the unique experiences, strengths, and perspectives of veterans and military-connected students, and supports their successful transition, persistence, and completion in higher education.
DESCRIPTION:
The Academic Counselor for the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) provides comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling to student veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and military-connected dependents. The counselor supports students in clarifying educational goals, navigating college systems, and progressing toward completion, transfer, and career pathways.
This position requires a demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice, with an understanding of the unique experiences and challenges faced by veterans and military-connected students. The counselor collaborates with faculty, staff, and campus partners to design, coordinate, and deliver counseling services and programming, and contributes to the ongoing development, assessment, and improvement of VRC services and initiatives.
We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in-person during the week of March 23, 2026. Second round interviews are tentatively set for the week of April 6, 2026. All dates are subject to change.
Responsibilities
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Provide comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling to student veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and military-connected dependents.
- Develop, monitor, and update Student Educational Plans (SEPs) aligned with students' educational goals, degree or transfer requirements, and applicable veterans' education benefits.
- Support students in course selection, major exploration, transfer planning, and progress toward certificates, degrees, and employment goals.
- Provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed counseling and crisis support, and connect students to appropriate campus, community, and veteran-serving resources.
- Support Veterans Resource Center programs and services, including outreach, workshops, orientations, and community-building activities that promote persistence and completion.
- Collaborate with counseling faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and campus partners to ensure coordinated, holistic support for student veterans.
- Teach counseling or personal development courses, when assigned, and maintain required instructional and counseling records.
- Participate in shared governance, program assessment, and ongoing professional development to remain current in counseling practices and veteran-serving best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent.
OR the equivalent AND
Candidates must possess: a commitment to encouragement of learning and an enthusiastic attitude toward student learning; sensitivity to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds who may have wide ranges of abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience working with and assisting Veterans.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and implement Veterans Counseling projects and special events.
- Knowledge about Veterans Educational Benefits (GI Bill).
- Ability to effectively serve as a liaison, communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and external providers concerning veteran specific issues. Knowledge of the manifestations of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized particularly in academic counseling.
- Knowledge of occupational opportunities for Veterans, community agencies and other organizations serving students who are Veterans, issues facing Veterans, and state and federal guidelines and services to Veterans.
- Experience working with students/clients individually and in groups, including personal and academic counseling.
- Possess a willingness to participate in shared/participatory governance of the Division and the College.
- Demonstrate an ability to self-evaluate and effect change for personal growth and improvement, as well as an ability to accept constructive feedback and effect change appropriately and participate in professional growth and development activities and lifelong learning.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The successful candidate will work in an office environment within the VRC office, utilizing technology to manage student records and provide remote counseling services. The role may require occasional evening or weekend hours, as well as participation in meetings and workshops across multiple campuses and online formats. Frequent use of online meetings using Zoom or Microsoft Teams with webcam on. Phone and email will be required to communicate with all campus communities.
