Job Summary
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Inpatient Vet Technician to work in the Intermediate Care (IMC), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Emergency Room (ER) section of our Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital.
The individual in this position will work directly with board-certified emergency and critical care veterinarians and rotating intern doctors to help facilitate quality care and patient flow through the IMC, ICU, and ER.
Essential Functions
- Administers treatments and monitoring of patients admitted in IMC or ICU, observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, collects and labels specimens, performs treatments, and administers medications as prescribed by primary veterinarian.
- Performs, instructs, and demonstrates advanced veterinary care techniques and procedures related to emergency and critical care medicine.
- Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring advanced procedures and life-saving techniques including CPR, mechanical ventilation, and dialysis.
- Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation.
- Performs emergency triage and stabilization of patients presenting through the Emergency service.
- May be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks.
- This position will work to provide care for patients after hours, on weekends, and holidays.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Level I: Associate’s degree or vocational certificate in animal science or related field.
Level II: Associate’s degree or vocational certificate in animal science or related field plus 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
Level III: Associate’s degree or vocational certificate in animal science or related field plus 4 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
Substitution allowed for Experience: Graduate degrees can be used in lieu of experience.
Minimum License and Certifications
Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, OR Have met all requirements to become licensed in the State of Alabama. Licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
Salary Range: $37,910 - $66,050
Working Hours: This is a rotating day shift position: Mon – Thurs 7am – 5pm; Fri – Sun 7am – 8pm. Rotating holiday coverage as well as flexibility with scheduling will be necessary.
Location: Auburn, AL
Special Instructions: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. Employees in this role must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDC guidelines. Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccination series, periodic titer checks, and any necessary boosters.
