Auburn Veterinary Specialists - Gulf Shores seeks candidates for a Veterinary Technician position to perform various tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients within the Ophthalmology service. Some responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, assisting Veterinarians with ocular exams, performing and/or assisting with diagnostic testing, anesthesia, Ophthalmic instrumentation and equipment care, and general veterinary technician duties.

Auburn Veterinary Specialists is the centerpiece of a 24,000-square-foot Auburn University Educational Complex in Gulf Shores, Alabama, providing specialty veterinary services and educational opportunities for students interested in internal medicine and surgery, and is a satellite of the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions

  • Assist Veterinarian with ocular exams.
  • Perform and/or assist with diagnostic testing (Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, Ocular Ultrasounds, Electroretinogram testing, etc.).
  • Ophthalmic instrumentation and equipment care.
  • General veterinary technician duties (monitoring patient's vitals, medication administration, pain management, phlebotomy, IV catheter placement, general patient care, or inventory management).
  • Organizes, cleans, stocks, and prepares treatment rooms for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
  • Administers injections, anesthesia, serums, vaccines, and treatments to animals, including tasks such as dressing wounds, cleaning teeth, and monitoring vital signs of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.
  • Performs X-rays and other laboratory tests, assist in surgery, and process tissue samples to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
  • Cares for and monitors the condition of animals before, during, and/or after surgery.
  • Performs emergency first aid, such as emergency resuscitation or other life-saving procedures.
  • May triage phone calls from referring veterinarians/clients as well as schedule appointments for diagnostic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian. Advise and educate animal owners.
  • May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to others. May provide input to performance reviews of other employees.

Duties will be divided between Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Surgery but this position will be the primary tech responsible for Ophthalmology.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification.

Minimum License and Certifications

Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, OR

Have met all requirements to become licensed in the State of Alabama. Licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.

Salary Range

$37,910-$53,070

Working Hours if Non-Traditional

Tues - Fri 7:30am - 6:00pm
