Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics

The Department of Classics at Carleton College invites applications for a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2026. This is a benefits-eligible appointment. We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a broad and varied student body.

We are seeking an entry-level teacher-scholar who can teach Latin and Greek at all levels and is passionate about working in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in both of our four-course language sequences as well as in-translation courses on literature and culture and upper-level language: in each year, five courses over Carleton’s three 10-week terms to be chosen based on the candidate's interests and the department's needs.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The field of specialization is open, but we are especially interested in someone who will bring expertise that will expand and complement our current offerings and contribute to the department’s teaching of literary analysis both for majors and non-majors.

Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the breadth of our student body and American society. Members of underrepresented groups at Carleton are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please visit the Carleton College website and submit an online application that includes (1) a cover letter that introduces the candidate, their teaching and research interests and strengths, and their goals over the next two years; (2) a c.v.; (3) short descriptions of two proposed in-translation literature or culture courses (150-300 words each); and (4) a concise (one-page) statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how the candidate would contribute to a college community that embraces a breadth of people and perspectives as one of its core values. After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a request for the contact information for three references, including at least one who is able to specifically address teaching experience.

The deadline for receipt of applications is January 30th, 2026. Preliminary Zoom interviews will be scheduled in mid-March. For further inquiries, please contact Prof. Clara Hardy at chardy@carleton.edu.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $61,500 - $65,575. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility. Carleton also offers a robust suite of benefits including:

  • A generous 403(b) retirement plan with a 10% employer contribution and 2% employee contribution
  • Medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for all employees

Carleton College is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000, located in Northfield, Minnesota. More information at https://www.carleton.edu/faculty-candidates/.
