Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Carleton College invites applications for a part-time visiting faculty member for the 2026–2027 academic year at the rank of assistant professor. Candidates holding a Ph.D. in psychology or a closely related field by the start date of the position are preferred; applicants who have substantially completed a Ph.D. may also be considered, at the rank of Instructor. We are looking for candidates with a strong research and teaching background in animal behavior, psychophysiology, and/or cognitive neuroscience. Responsibilities include teaching introductory psychology, a mid-level course and an upper-level seminar in your area of expertise. The specific terms each course is taught may be negotiable, and these courses may be spread across two or three of Carleton's Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. (For comparison, a full-time one-year teaching load is six courses spread equally across three trimester terms of ten weeks each.) The start date would be either September 1, 2026 or January 1, 2027, depending on the agreed-upon schedule. Office space and shared research facilities would be available for the duration of the appointment. This position is eligible for benefits.

Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the breadth of our student body and American society. Members of underrepresented groups at Carleton are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please visit the Carleton College web site at go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs to complete the online application by submitting a cover letter, CV, and a statement about teaching students from a variety of backgrounds in an undergraduate, residential liberal arts environment. After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a request for the contact information for three references, including at least one who is able to specifically address teaching experience. Applications will be given primary consideration as of March 10, 2026. Applications submitted after this date will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Please contact the department chair, Mija Van Der Wege at mvanderw@carleton.edu with any inquiries.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $36,900 - $39,345. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility. Carleton also offers a robust suite of benefits including:

  • A generous 403(b) retirement plan with a 10% employer contribution and 2% employee contribution
  • Medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for all employees
