Job Summary/Basic Function:The Department of Advanced Studies in Education at SUNY Potsdam invites applications for a full-time (10-month) Visiting Assistant Professor to support graduate and undergraduate programs, including the M.S.Ed. Special Education, Certificate of Advanced Studies in Inclusive and Special Education, and special education courses for general education teacher certification programs. Start date is negotiable, but could begin as early as August 2024.
With a focus on enhancing diversity and equity for all students, this position offers a unique opportunity to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses for initial teacher certification programs and to supervise clinical field experiences. While a variety of instructional modalities will be required, including online, this is a residential position at the SUNY Potsdam campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting curricula and teaching courses for SUNY Potsdam’s special education and general education programs during the fall and spring semesters. Additional duties include advising in the program, participation in program and department meetings, contributing to the assessment and accreditation activities of the School and College including program assessment, professional service and scholarly work appropriate to rank, and participation in partnership advisory committees.
Opportunities to teach during summer semesters and – by work for hire contract – to develop hybrid and online courses are also available, dependent on need and enrollment. The incumbent may also be required to teach in the evenings, off-site, or through hybrid or online formats. Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
- Job Requirements & Essential Functions of the Job:Maintain a teaching load of no more than 12 credit hours per semester, as agreed upon in collaboration with the department chair and program coordinator;
- Engage and plan for academic advising of students in consultation with the chair and program coordinators;
- Collaborate with assessment personnel and program/department faculty to assist in collecting assessment data and contributing to program reports;
- Assist with the tracking of teacher candidates’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions;
- Engage with P-12 school partners for field experience requirements;
- Engage in professional service and scholarship appropriate to rank;
- Attend program, department, school, and college meetings in keeping with roles and responsibilities;
- Fully participate in faculty governance; and
- Actively engage in school-wide, departmental, and program related student recruitment activities.
- Required Qualifications:An earned doctorate in Special Education or closely related field from an accredited institution (ABD will be considered);
- At least three years of successful teaching of students with diverse abilities within a P-12 school setting;
- Experience teaching and/or developing online courses;
- Competence in using Learning Management System (LMS) education platforms (e.g., D2L/Brightspace, Google Classroom), digital technology and assistive technology learning tools, and campus-based technologies (e.g., Microsoft Office); and
- Demonstrated the ability to conduct research appropriate to the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

- Preferred Qualifications:Experience teaching special education or related courses at the college level;
- Experience supervising teacher candidates in their clinical field experiences;
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with various stakeholders across the P-16 continuum;
- Experience with, or demonstrated capacity for, teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds to advance the College’s mission of equity and excellence;
- Active involvement with professional organizations and/participation in professional development activities; and
- Experience with higher education accreditation and assessment, specifically with Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
