Temporary Position Summary
The Visiting Research Scholar will contribute to collaborative research on microbial biodiversity. The scholar will participate in ongoing projects focused on the collection, culture, and molecular characterization of microbial eukaryotes and environmental samples. A key component of this position includes mentoring and training undergraduate students in laboratory and analytical techniques relevant to the research objectives.
This position is aligned with the scholar's J-1 Research Program as stated in the Form DS-2019 and adheres to all U.S. Department of State regulations for visiting research scholars.
Temporary Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct collaborative research on microbial biodiversity, including sample processing, culture maintenance, microscopy, and molecular analyses (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, sequencing preparation).
- Assist in designing and implementing experimental protocols related to microbial and environmental diversity studies.
- Train and mentor undergraduate students in research methods, data collection, and analysis techniques.
- Participate in laboratory meetings, data discussions, and project planning sessions.
- Contribute to the documentation and organization of research data for reports and publications.
- Support collaboration between Spelman College and partner institutions through research communication and data sharing.
- Ensure compliance with safety, ethical, and institutional research standards.
Required Qualifications
- Master of Science (MSC) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven experience in microbial culture, microscopy, and/or molecular biology techniques.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or supervising students in laboratory or field research settings is preferred.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented research environment.
