Pay Range: $80,000 - $115,000

Pay Determination:
Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description:

Syracuse University College of Law invites applications for a Visiting Teaching Professor position teaching Legal Communication and Research ('LCR'), Civil Procedure, Contracts, Property, and/or other doctrinal courses.

Syracuse University College of Law seeks to hire a temporary Visiting Teaching Professor for the 2026-27 academic year. This is a non-tenure-eligible, non-renewable contract faculty position. Candidates are expected to teach in the residential and online law school programs. Teaching duties may include sections of Legal Communication and Writing in the core first year writing program, as well as doctrinal courses including Civil Procedure, Contracts, Property, and/or other doctrinal courses.

Candidates should have an excellent academic record and should hold a JD degree from an accredited law school. Preferred post-JD experience and credentials include advanced degrees, judicial clerkships, relevant legal practice (including proficiency with the use of AI tools in legal practice), and prior teaching experience. A demonstrated commitment to excellent classroom teaching is required. Candidates must have the skills and abilities to effectively interact with many different groups of students, colleagues, and community members.

The anticipated start date for this position is August 2026. This is an academic-year position with fourteen (14) to eighteen (18) credits of teaching across fall and spring semesters. The salary range for a Visiting Teaching Professor, depending on experience, is $80,000 to $115,000 with benefits. Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have an excellent academic record and should hold a JD degree from an accredited law school.

Job Specific Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have the skills and abilities to effectively interact with many different groups of students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Strong research and writing skills are necessary for this position, as is a demonstrable commitment to excellent classroom teaching.
  • Although scholarship is not a requirement for this position, an interest in scholarship, particularly in the area of legal research and writing, is encouraged.
  • Provide detailed feedback on student assignments, prepare classes, and work on projects and other student assignments as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and/or update a class syllabus in compliance with College of Law policies.
  • Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Prepare lectures, projects, and other student assignments.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meet all designated class periods.
  • Submit all grades according to the College of Law and University regulations.
  • Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Build a positive rapport with students and faculty.
