The Vulnerability & Threat Analyst provides operational support to the University’s cyber security team. The primary focus of this role is the routine monitoring of security dashboards, assisting with the administration of vulnerability scanning tools, and ensuring that threat data is accurately recorded in tracking systems.
Key Accountabilities- Review scheduled vulnerability scans, vulnerability alerts and threat feeds to identify and flag high-priority items for escalation to other members of the cyber security team
- Assist in the preparation of routine security reports by compiling data from various monitoring tools.
- Improve coverage of IT assets in vulnerability scanning and security monitoring tools, ensuring they are covered by regular scanning cycles.
- Follow all University IT policies and procedures, ensuring data privacy and confidentiality are maintained
- Education: Relevant progress toward a tertiary qualification in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, a related qualification, or relevant experience
- Technical literacy:
- Foundational understanding of computer networking, common operating systems, the software development lifecycle.
- Familiarity with common vulnerability databases (e.g., CVE/NVD).
- Experience running and using common cybersecurity tools
- Experience developing tools and scripts using common software scripting languages (eg. Python, Javascript, Powershell)
- Basic familiarity with navigating cloud infrastructure environments, in particularly AWS (Amazon Web Services)
- Analytical Skills: Ability to follow detailed procedures to identify anomalies in data sets or security logs.
- Communication: Competent written and verbal communication skills for documenting technical issues and communicating with internal team members.
- Detail-Oriented: Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive data-driven tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
- Available for up to 35 hours of work per week
- Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Experience using SIEMs or similar log monitoring systems, in particular the ability to write queries in common query languages such as KQL .
- Experience creating reports and dashboards in cyber security tools and/or with data visualisation tools such as PowerBI
- Experience in developing and testing software scripts and applications that integrate with security tools and APIs
- Experience reviewing configurations of cybersecurity tools and devices ( mail/spam filtering, firewalls, endpoint detection, cloud posture )
- Experience in discovering vulnerabilities and defects in software applications, systems and devices using common vulnerability scanners, other vulnerability discovery tools or by other means
- Experience working with common identity providers such as EntraID and Okta, and a good understanding of legacy and current Microsoft identity products.
- Experience discovering and remediating cybersecurity issues in a large hyperscale clouds, in particular AWS. Exposure to AWS native and other cloud security tools, such as AWS Guardduty, Inspector and Security Hub
- Experience using enterprise ticketing and task tracking software
- Experience working in higher education would be a plus
- Experience with remediating cybersecurity issues, particularly on large enterprise or education networks
