Workplace Safety Specialist

The Workplace Safety Specialist provides support to faculty, staff, and students, to help facilitate, assess, and promote a safe and healthy working environment at Brown University. The major responsibilities for this position will be to minimize exposures, prevent injuries and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, RIDOH and other federal and state regulations. The Workplace Safety Specialist will implement occupational health & safety programs, conduct comprehensive safety inspections, and provide training. This position will work with faculty, staff and students to resolve regulatory safety and exposure related issues, and conduct industrial hygiene monitoring to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. This position will also be involved with student group safety, environmental compliance, research safety, emergency response team activities and other safety and compliance related projects.

In addition, this position is part of the Emergency Response Team required to respond to emergencies as a rotating member of the on-call team before, during, and after business hours including weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

Job Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in a science discipline (Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, or Engineering preferred) and three (3) years of relevant experience or appropriate combination of education and experience to succeed in the position.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace applications, including creating presentations, drafting documents and managing spreadsheets.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good communication, problem solving, organizational and computer skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protection for emergencies and participation on the Emergency Response Team.
  • Must be able to pass a background criminal investigation.
  • Must be able to access all areas of the University.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height.

Additional physical demands and working conditions

  • Will be required to work with or around hazardous materials including radioactive materials, biological agents, hazardous chemicals and compressed gas.
  • May need to enter areas where hazardous materials are used or stored in response to small spills while wearing appropriate PPE as part of emergency response.
  • Will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment including an air-purifying respirator (APR)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and visitors and employ supportive methods to achieve the desired results.
  • Must conduct safety inspections to identify a broad range of safety issues including, but not limited to, hazard Communication, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, material handling, machine safety, electrical safety, confined space, asbestos, lead, mold, etc.
