Applications are invited for the post of Workshop Technician in the Department of Earth Sciences.

The department is seeking a Workshop Technician who is a qualified or experienced carpenter to join a small, dedicated team of maintenance and workshop technicians. The role requires a proactive, meticulous individual with strong carpentry skills and a commitment to high-quality work. The role holder should also be experienced in building maintenance, and capable of supporting the day-to-day maintenance operations of our central Cambridge site, and ensure our facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained. The role holder will also provide carpentry support to the Sedgwick Museum, which is an integral part of our central Cambridge campus.

The position reports to the Building Services and Workshop Manager and will work closely with a wide range of Departmental staff and students, and engage with the University Estates Division, the Safety Office, and University Security team, as well as external contractors, as necessary.

The role holder will have proven experience in carpentry/joinery, as well as experience of working in a facilities or building maintenance setting. Excellent organisational skills, together with a high degree of precision and accuracy is essential. You should have knowledge of carpentry tools static woodworking machinery equipment, materials, and construction techniques. A good understanding of Health and Safety requirements in a workshop environment is key. A good knowledge of related trades (e.g. painting, general maintenance) and supervisory experience of workshop/maintenance staff is desirable.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
