Function of Position:
Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Writing Consultants for Evening Shifts are professional staff who work with students on one or more evenings (Monday through Thursday between 4 pm - 9 pm) to help them to develop effective writing strategies and to become self-regulated learners.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary Functions:
- Foster the development of independent, intentional learners;
- Meet with students on a one-on-one basis to provide learning assistance related to writing
- Help students with the writing process - not with editing papers
- Using guiding questions, elicit critical thinking in students, aiding the students understanding of his/her writing
- Help students understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays
- Help students understand grammar mechanics
- Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty
- Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters
- Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline specific content. The Director of Learning Support Systems will collaborate with English Department as needed.
- Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook
- Offer space for students to develop their own unique voice and writing style;
- Model the stages of the writing process and assist with all points, including organizing and structuring paragraphs, thesis development, research, analysis and critical thinking, citations, structural coherence, clarity, revising, and editing, etc.;
- Do not proofread but help students to recognize patterns of error in their writing.
- Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to Writing Consultations services
- Assisting with other learning assistance projects as assigned
- Adheres to the College Code of Conduct.
- Contributes to, supports, and maintains an equitable, inclusive, and collaborative College environment.
- Maintains technological competencies utilized by the College.
- Commits to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.
- Commits to professional growth. which includes seeking ongoing training in diversity, equity and inclusion to better serve students.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or similar
- Experience working with diverse college populations
- Technology savvy
- Two years of community college teaching experience in English composition
- Master's or Doctoral degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or similar
- Some tutoring experience
Job Type: Part Time
Hours: 10-20 Hours per Week
Pay Rate:
Paraprofessional
Associates Degree - $16.00/hr
Professional
Bachelor's Degree - $17/hr
Master's Degree - $19/hr
PhD - $21.00
Adjunct - $25.00/hr (to qualify for adjunct pay rate, applicants must have at least one assigned course for the semester)
