Job Description Summary

The College of Education at Eastern Oregon University seeks a tenure-line faculty member with expertise in literacy education, the Science of Reading, and general education pedagogy to serve across multiple licensure and graduate programs. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, assessment, and core education foundations; supervise clinical field experiences; mentor and advise teacher candidates; and contribute to program development, accreditation, and continuous improvement efforts. This position requires active engagement in scholarship and service that supports educator preparation and strengthens partnerships with regional schools. The faculty member will play a vital role in meeting TSPC and AAQEP standards, ensuring high-quality and evidence-based instruction, and advancing EOU's mission to prepare equity-minded educators who can meet the diverse learning needs of students across Oregon.

  • Expertise in Literacy Education and the Science of Reading: Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction, reading assessment, and literacy development across P-12 contexts.
  • Generalist Pedagogical Knowledge: Strong grounding in core education foundations such as curriculum development, instructional planning, learning theory, assessment, and child/adolescent development.

  • Program Development and Continuous Improvement: Ability to contribute to program assessment, accreditation activities (AAQEP), and data-informed improvement processes.
  • Collaborative Professional Practice: Capacity to work effectively with colleagues, school district partners, and community stakeholders to strengthen educator preparation pathways.
  • Scholarly Engagement: Evidence of ongoing or emerging research, creative activity, or professional inquiry relevant to literacy education, pedagogy, or educator preparation.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate's teaching responsibilities will include on-campus and online courses in areas such as:

  • Evidence-based literacy instruction and the Science of Reading
  • Reading assessment and intervention
  • Foundations of education, general pedagogy, or child/adolescent development
  • Curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices across P-12 settings
  • Supervision of clinical field experiences and student teaching

The candidate will contribute to program development, assessment, and accreditation activities aligned with TSPC and AAQEP expectations. Additional responsibilities include advising undergraduate and graduate students, engaging in scholarly work that supports educator preparation, and collaborating with regional school partners. EOU is particularly interested in applicants whose teaching and research support equity-minded practice and who can engage both campus and online students at a primarily undergraduate and professionally oriented university.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Literacy Education, Reading, Curriculum & Instruction, Elementary Education, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered if the doctorate will be completed by the start of their third year.
  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy instruction with strong grounding in the Science of Reading (evidence-based reading practices).
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in P-12 settings and/or supporting teacher candidates in clinical field experiences.
  • Experience designing and delivering instruction that is effective for students with a wide range of learning needs, including those from rural, first-generation, or otherwise underserved educational contexts.
  • Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Eastern Oregon University will not sponsor applicants for employment visas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience teaching literacy courses in higher education, including undergraduate and/or graduate-level instruction.
  • Expertise as a generalist in education, such as curriculum and instruction, assessment, educational psychology, child/adolescent development, or classroom management.
  • Record of scholarly productivity, such as peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or ongoing research agendas connected to literacy or educator preparation.
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates in clinical or student teaching placements, particularly in rural or diverse P-12 settings.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the academic success of students from a variety of educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, including first-generation, rural, and other underrepresented learners.
  • Successful online teaching experience, including use of LMS platforms and evidence-based strategies for engaging remote learners.
  • Experience collaborating with P-12 schools, school districts, or community partners on literacy initiatives, professional development, or educator pathways.
