University of Missouri - Columbia, also known as Mizzou, is a public land-grant research university located in Columbia, Missouri. It is the flagship campus of the four-campus University of Missouri System and the largest university in the state. Founded in 1839, it was the first public university west of the Mississippi River and the first in Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase territory. Mizzou is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”.

 

Academic Programs

Mizzou offers more than 300 degree programs in 13 major academic divisions, including engineering, architecture, journalism, business, education, medicine, law, and arts and sciences. The university has a reputation of excellence in teaching and research, and is home to several nationally recognized schools and programs, such as the Missouri School of Journalism, the world’s first journalism school; the Truman School of Public Affairs, a top-ranked public policy school; the College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the best veterinary schools in the nation; and the School of Health Professions, the largest health-related degree provider in Missouri. The university also has several research centers and institutes, such as the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center, the sole source of isotopes used in nuclear medicine in the United States; the Bond Life Sciences Center, a multidisciplinary research facility that fosters collaboration among scientists; and the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, a state-of-the-art clinical and research center that serves children and families affected by autism.

Mizzou has a diverse and vibrant student body of over 31,000 students from all 50 states and over 100 countries. The university has a low student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1 and an average class size of 27 students. The university’s main campus in Columbia is situated on 1,262 acres of landscaped grounds that feature historic buildings, modern facilities, green spaces, and public art. The campus is also home to the Mizzou Botanic Garden, which showcases over 6,000 plants from around the world; the State Historical Society of Missouri, which houses one of the largest collections of Missouri history; and the Museum of Art and Archaeology, which displays over 16,000 works of art and artifacts from various cultures and periods.
