Job Description
This full-time faculty position offers the opportunity to teach Health Information Management courses at Laurel Ridge Community College. Faculty members play a vital role in creating a positive, caring, and dynamic learning environment that fosters student success, values diversity, promotes community engagement, and reflects Laurel Ridge Community College's mission and values. The successful candidate will support the goals of the College, School of Professional and Technical Studies, and the Health Information Management program while adhering to all Virginia Community College System (VCCS) policies and procedures.
Responsibilities of this position will include serving on college committees (as assigned), evaluating and revising the curriculum, participating in monthly college-wide and division meetings, and assisting with program assessment and development. Faculty members are to engage in activities that demonstrate a commitment to students, community organizations, and/or the College. Typical loads for full-time faculty at Laurel Ridge Community College are normally 15-credit hours per semester, during the academic year, with 10 student engagement hours required each week. Faculty members are also required to collaborate with others (full and part-time employees) to ensure teaching uniformity and continuity of material and expectations.
Other duties include:
- Faculty must be available based on student needs. Teaching schedule may include day, evening, weekend, and on and off-campus, distance learning, and web delivery. Faculty members will be required to use best practices in face-to-face and online teaching.
- Faculty will publish student engagement hours throughout the semester (and delineate virtual versus in-person).
- Faculty will respond constructively to student comments and questions and require the same nature of response from students. Faculty will respond promptly to student emails, phone calls, or other communications (within 2 business days).
- Faculty will work as part of a discipline team to complete the requirements of CAHIIM accreditation.
- Faculty will work strengthen and expand relationships and partnerships with K-12, higher education, industry, and community organizations in support of the college mission, vision, and values.
- Faculty will engage in activities that keep them current in pedagogy and curriculum.
- Faculty duties may also include academic advising, recruiting, tutoring, as is applicable.
- Faculty will seek out opportunities for increasing response rates on student course surveys, analyze student ratings and feedback, identify trends needing improvement, and implement an action plan to accomplish that improvement.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for the position is $54,387 to $117,180, per year, however, actual starting salary will commensurate with education and/or experience. The position is a 9 month faculty role and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies and the Virginia Community College System. KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management OR Associate's degree in Health Information Management or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Two years of full-time professional experience in Health Information Management.
- Current AHIMA credential: RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator).
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
Additional Considerations
- Master's degree in Health Information Management or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Additional AHIMA certifications preferred, including coding and specialty credentials such as CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, or CHPS.
- Proven experience with ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems.
- Proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Experience in assessing student learning outcomes and applying CAHIIM accreditation standards.
- Demonstrated ability to teach Health Information Management courses in multiple formats, including traditional in-person, hybrid, online, and HyFlex.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, preferably at a two-year institution.
- Ability to effectively integrate technology into classroom instruction and online course delivery

Required Travel: Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
