Academic Advising Director (HEO) - Division of Science
POSITION DETAILS
The Division of Science at The City College of New York seeks a Director of Academic Advising to provide strategic leadership and oversight of academic advising, student success programs, and enrichment initiatives across the Division?s five academic departments. The Director will play a central role in advancing student success, retention, and degree completion in STEM disciplines, supporting a highly diverse student population, including many first-generation college students.
In collaboration with the Office of Dean of Science, the Director will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive advising model serving undergraduate students pursuing science majors as well as those preparing for prehealth and pre-engineering pathways. This includes oversight of advising systems, academic planning processes, and student engagement initiatives aligned with institutional priorities.
The Director will provide leadership in the planning, coordination, and continuous improvement of advising services, and will play a key role in the development of new programs supporting student success and progression in STEM fields. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, advisors, and administrative units across the Division and the College to ensure effective integration of advising with academic programs and student support services.
Campus-specific Information and duties
- Leads and manages academic advising across the Division of Science
- Designs and implements a division-wide advising strategy aligned with student success, retention, and graduation goals
- Oversees advising services for students in science majors and pre-professional pathways, including course sequencing, laboratory requirements, and long-term academic planning
- Supervises advising staff and oversee hiring, training, and professional development
- Directs student success initiatives, including tutoring, peer mentoring, and academic support programs
- Lead the development and expansion of advising and enrichment programs, including pre-freshman and transition programs
- Oversees undergraduate research engagement initiatives, including student poster presentations and participation in conferences
- Oversees programs in student preparation for graduate, medical, engineering, and other professional programs
- Collaborates with academic departments and campus units to coordinate advising with broader student success efforts and liaising with the college-wide Chief Academic Advisor
- Utilizes data and assessment tools to evaluate advising effectiveness and guide continuous improvement
- Advises divisional leadership on strategy, policy, and program development related to student success
- Secures and solicits external funding: leads and writes proposals to state, federal or foundation initiatives/solicitations in the areas of student advising, student success and career enhancement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor?s degree and eight years? related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master?s degree in higher education administration, STEM discipline, counseling, or related field
- Experience advising students in STEM, pre-health, or pre-engineering pathways
- Experience supervising professional staff and managing advising operations
- Familiarity with CUNY systems such as Navigate, DegreeWorks and CUNYfirst
- Experience coordinating tutoring, mentoring, or academic enrichment programs
- Experience supporting undergraduate research initiatives and student professional development
- Experience with Microsoft Planner or similar for project management functions
- Bachelor?s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited institution
- Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience in academic advising, student success programming, or higher education administration
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex programs and assume full administrative responsibility for a major functional area
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and diverse student populations
